ロックが好きじゃなくても「ニルヴァーナ」「カート・コバーン」の名前は聞いたことがあるのではないでしょうか？間もなく公開される最新ドキュメンタリー「 Montage of Heck 」を記念して、現在のメンバーや家族について紹介します！

Even if you’re not a fan of rock, “Nirvana” and “Kurt Cobain” are names that I’m sure you heard of? The documentary “Montage of Heck” will be released soon, and so we are here to talk about the surviving members and family of Kurt Cobain!

Kris: Hey guys!

Jun: Hello.

Kris: It’s Junko!

Jun: It’s Kristina!

Kris: And today we’re gonna talk about…BABIES!

Jun: No. We’re actually going to talk about Kurt Cobain’s new documentary…Montage of Heck.

Kris: For those of you who don’t know who Kurt Cobain is…He was the frontman of the band, Nirvana.

Jun: Yes…a legend. They influenced many artists during that era, and many artists today.

Kris: There’s a new documentary that’s coming out, about his life and it has a lot of unseen footage as well as animation, and testimonials from his friends and family. The band consisted of 3 members. Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Chris Novoselic.

Jun: Yes.

Kris: You couldn’t have grown up in America without knowing the name, even if you don’t like rock!

Jun: Or even if you don’t recognize the name, Nirvana, you hear their song…and you know.

Kris: Coming out from the 80s where the idea in America that “the jock”, “the cheerleader” are the ones on top…you know…even if you’re comfortable being on the bottom…it was kind of nice to look into a magazine or onto the TV and see someone who you could connect with.

Jun: Is relatable. And because his music spoke a lot about honest and raw emotions, so many people were able to connect.

Kris: Nirvana represents stepping out of what people expect from you. Rock is breaking out of the mold and expressing yourself.

Jun: Nirvana was one of the first few bands that actually openly discussed mental illness. And I know that in the album Nevermind, Lithium…is a song title. A lot of people didn’t know about Lithium.

Kris: It made people more aware of depression and Kurt Cobain suffered from depression for quite a while. Even with the success of his band, with his marriage, and his newborn child…and that eventually led to his suicide in 1994.

Jun: Let’s talk about where the surviving members are.

Kris: Ok. Are you familiar with…Dave Grohl?

Jun: He’s the frontman for Foo Fighters right?

Kris: Yeah! Dave Grohl went onto his own commercial success. At one point he did invite his friend, his ex-bandmember Chris Novoselic to join him after..after …I think it was “Big Me” or “Everlong”…to play bass on it. But he declined because he was more into…

Jun: Well he’s just, he’s politically active. I mean he…started a couple of bands himself, released albums with those bands, but it just wasn’t as successful. And he just kind of sticks with politics now.

Kris: Aside from his band members, Kurt Cobain also left behind his wife and newborn child.

Jun: Courtney Love was his wife as well as the frontwoman for the alternative band, Hole. Courtney Love suffered a lot. She fell into this whirlwind of substance abuse. She already had problems with substances …before. But it just got worse after his death. Because of her substance abuse, she did at one point lose custody of her daughter, Frances Bean. Who is now 22 years old. She refused the view of the public eye for numerous years. She didn’t want to be known as the daughter of Kurt Cobain and Courney Love. She wanted to be known as Frances Bean Cobain. Not to say she’s ashamed of her parents. She just didn’t want to use her parents’

Kris: Fame.

Jun: In order to get her own fame.

Kris: Which is kind of what happens in young Hollywood these days.

Jun: Also Frances Bean Cobain is the executive producer for this documentary.

Kris: Oh! That’s great!

Jun: Yeah! She wanted something real…that..

Kris: Showed her father?

Jun: Instead of glorifying everything.

Kris: Yeah.

Jun: And I think that’s really cool that she’s involved with it. I really like Frances Bean Cobain. She does dabble here and there with music…modeling…she’s also an artist. She goes by the name Fiddle Tim and has had exhibitions in LA. So far it seems like Courtney Love is back you know on her feet again. Their daughter is pursuing her dreams. And you know the other band members of Nirvana are successful in whatever field that they decided to continue in on.

Kris: Kurt Cobainを知らない人には…彼はNirvanaってバンドのフロントマンだったの。

Jun: はい…伝説。同時いろんなアーティストに影響与えてたよね、現代のアーティストにも。

Kris: 新しいドキュメンタリーが出るんだけど、彼の人生について、まだ見たことのない映像やアニメーション、友人や家族の証言など。バンドメンバーは３人いたの。Kurt Cobain、Dave Grohl、とChris Novoselic。

Jun: はい。

Kris: アメリカで育ったなら名前を知らないことはないよね、ロック好きじゃなくても。

Jun: 名前、Nirvana、に見覚え無くても曲を聴いたら…わかる。

Kris: 80年代からでてきて、理想的なアメリカでは「スポーツマン」「チアリーダー」が一番トップにいてさ…なんだろう…下にいても平気でもさ…雑誌やテレビをつけて自分が繋がれるような人がいるっていい気持ちだったよね。

Jun: 共感できる人。それだから彼の音楽ってすごく素直で生身の感情を語ってて、だから多くの人が共感できたんだよね。

Kris: Nirvanaが代表したのって他人から期待されてる自分像から離れることだよね。ロックって型から抜けだして自分を表現することだから。

Jun: Nirvanaって当時話してなかった精神病をオープンに話したバンドだよね。アルバム「Nevermind」でね、Lithium…って曲名なの。Lithiumのこと知らなかった人多かったの。

Kris: 鬱病を世間により認識与えたの、Kurt Cobain自信が鬱病と戦ってたから。バンドが成功してても、結婚してても、赤ちゃんが産まれても…彼はそのせいで1994年に自殺したの。

Jun: まだ生き残ってるメンバーについて話そう。

Kris: うん。知ってるかな…Dave Grohl？

Jun: 彼はFoo Fightersのフロントマンでしょ？

Kris: そう！Dave Grohlは自分の道で成功したの。一時的に元バンドメンバーのChris Novoselicをバンドに誘ったんだけど、確か…確かね…「Big Me」か「Everlong」の後に…ベースをやらないかって。でも彼は断ったのなぜなら…

Jun: 彼は政治的に活動してたから。まぁ、彼もさ…バンド2つ始めたし、アルバムもリリースしたけど、成功しなかったの。それで今ではもう政治だけかな。

Kris: バンドメンバー以外に、Kurt Cobainには奥さんと赤ちゃんがいたの。

Jun: Courtney Loveは彼の奥さんとバンドのHoleのフロントウーマンだったの。Courtney Loveかなり苦しんだね。彼女麻薬の渦巻きに落ちていったの。彼女以前も麻薬とかでの問題あったの。でも彼が死んでからひどくなって。そのせいで彼女も子供、Frances Bean、の保護資格をなくしたの。今では22歳なんだよね。ずっと世間の目に触れるのを避けてたの。彼女はKurt CobainとCourtney Loveの娘として知られたくなかったの。Frances Bean Cobainとして知られたかったの。親が恥ずかしかったってわけじゃないの。ただ、使いたくなかったの、親の

Jun: 自分の知名度を手に入れるのにね。

Kris: 現代のハリウッドでは逃れられないことだよね。

Jun: それとね、Frances Bean Cobainがねドキュメンタリーのエグゼクティブプロデューサーなの。

Kris: へぇ！いいね！

Jun: うん！彼女が欲しかったのはね本当…の…

Kris: お父さんを見せたかったの？

Jun: 全てを英雄っぽくみせるんじゃなくて。

Kris: うん。

Jun: それでね、彼女が関わってるのってすごく良いなって思う。私Frances Bean Cobainすごく好きなんだよね。彼女ちょっと音楽に関わってて…モデルも…彼女芸術家でもあるの。ペンネームがFiddle Timで、LAとかで個展開いたりしてて。今ではCourtney Loveもちゃんと戻ってきてるみたいで。娘も夢を追ってるし。他のNirvanaのメンバーも自分が進みたい道で成功してるみたいだしね。
