アメリカ人は靴を脱がないの？日本人のクローゼットにはコスプレ衣装がいっぱい？ Bobby とKristina が日本人とアメリカ人が持っているお互いの典型的なイメージと実際の違いについて語ります。

Jun’s voice: Stigma that Japanese culture…

Bobby: When you say you’re from America, what kind of reactions do you get?

Kristina: Oh! Wow. Maybe because I am darker and yet at the same time lighter than the two images they have of people from America.

Bobby: What do you think those are?

Kristina: Eh a white person and a black person.

Bobby: They don’t have like a lot of the sense that there’s an in between?

Kristina: I guess not. Not initially, until you know…then they think there are many different types of people in America.

Bobby: I get a lot of questions about being from America. Number 1, so you’re from California…and I’m from Florida. A lot of Japanese people I meet have very similar images of California and Florida. And they don’t know the difference between them. So I’ll say I’m from Florida and they’ll go, “Oh I’ve been to Los Angeles!” I’m like, “Alright.”

Kristina: That’s nice!

Bobby: So I know a stereotype about Americans, which is that we eat hamburgers everyday. We eat bread every day and that hamburgers are the main thing that we eat. And when I first came to Japan I used to get upset about that and be like, “No! We have more than hamburgers!” But then like somewhere…maybe my 3^rd or 4^th year I just gave up and was like, “You know…I actually love hamburgers. I should just stop fighting it.” Plus hamburgers are awesome. And Americans are really good at eating big sandwiches.

Kristina: MmHmm. I am not.

Bobby: What else do you get when people find out that you’re American?

Kristina: They always ask if I have a gun.

Bobby: Un. When I first got here…I didn’t even get “Do you have a gun?” I got, “How many guns do you have?” What about the idea that…“American girls are easy?”

Kristina: That’s funny, ’cause isn’t there a stereotype that Japanese girls are easy?

Bobby: …for American guys….

Kristina: Oh. Depending on what part of the country that you…survey, women are probably more open about sex. At the same time there’s tons of areas that are super conservative.

Bobby: I have another weird one.

Kristina: What?

Bobby: I’ve had multiple Japanese people tell me…or…ask me about…whether or not we have toothpicks in America.

Kristina: Really?

Bobby: And a lot of people think that Japan is the originator of toothpicks. And I think it’s a visibility problem. Because in Japan most toothpicks are on every table, and in America they’re usually at the register. So you know, if they’re not on the table, Japanese people don’t see them. They don’t…they assume they’re not there.

Kristina: Are we addressing the shoes one?

Bobby: The shoes? Oh we should! Yea! ‘Cause that’s different too! I think…I took my shoes off my family takes their shoes off when they go inside.

Kristina: Yeah so did mine.

Bobby: But there are lots of families that don’t. I think a lot of the no shoes culture has to do with tatami.

Kristina: Yeah.

Bobby: Tatami’s hard to clean.

Kristina: Oh yeah.

Bobby: If you get mud on tatami you’re done.

Kristina: It’s over.

Bobby: So what images did you have of Japanese people before you came?

Kristina: Um…before I came to Japan, my exposure was only in Samurai films and from images on the internet. Which consists mostly of middle aged men dressed as Sailor Moon wearing pink and blue wigs, and girls in crazy costumes. So I thought those type of people were running all over Japan.

Bobby: I don’t think you just like come across those images on the internet without looking for them. I thought like Japanese people…all Japanese people were like very studious. They like studying, they were smart, the kids were all super well-behaved. It’s just like the states. Some kids are, some kids aren’t. Some schools are strict, some schools are awful.

Kristina: Yup.

Bobby: But I think, I didn’t have the image of Japan as much of a drinking society as it is. I had no idea how much social drinking was a big thing here in Japan before I got here.

Kristina: I was surprised too. One of the things that I thought was interesting, was that when you go drinking with your “senpai” they pay for everything! But at the same time…they can exert power over you, like to continue drinking to the point where you’re going to pass out on the train and not make it home.

Bobby: It really is a lot of obligation. Like if you’ve never met someone from another country, it’s natural to have ideas or images of them. But the thing that I always try to tell people to do, is don’t make assumptions. Give the person a chance to show you who they are. So don’t just assume that all Americans are like me and eat hamburgers every day, give them a chance to show who they are.

Kristina: Yea, because if I didn’t…I would just assume that every person I met in Japan secretly had a wardrobe full of cosplay costumes.

Bobby: I think you were just looking at the wrong websites.

Kristina: Or the right ones…

Bobby: アメリカから来たって言うと、どんなリアクションされる？

Kristina: お！へぇ。たぶん私黒いけど、イメージにあるアメリカの人の黒さよりは濃くないからじゃないのかな。

Bobby: それって何だと思う？

Kristina: え、白人と黒人だよ。

Bobby: その間とかのイメージってあまりないの？

Kristina: ないみたいね。わざとじゃないけど、知ってからは…そしたらアメリカにはいろんな人がいるんだってわかるから。

Bobby: 僕はアメリカから来たっていうと沢山質問されるよ。まず最初、「君ってカルフォニア出身でしょ」とかって…でも僕はフロリダ出身なんだよね。僕が会う多くの日本人ってカルフォニアとフロリダってすごく似てるイメージを持ってるの。だから2つの違いがわからないの。だから僕がフロリダ出身なんだって言うと「ロスに行ったことあるよ！」って言われて僕が「なるほどね」って返すの。

Kristina: それいいね！

Bobby: 1ついいアメリカ人のステレオタイプ知ってるよ、それはみんなハンバーガーを毎日食べるっていうやつ。パンを毎日食べて、ハンバーガーがメインの食事なの。初めて日本に来た時それで結構怒ったんだよね、「違う！ハンバーガー以外にもたくさんある！」でもいつだったかな…3年か4年目くらいに諦めたよ、「まぁ…実際ハンバーガー好きだし。もう抵抗するのやめよう」、ハンバーガーって最高じゃん。それにアメリカ人って大きいサンドイッチ食べるの上手いよね。

Kristina: うーん。私は違うけど。

Bobby: 他にさ、アメリカ人だって知られたらなんて言われる？

Kristina: 銃持ってるかいつも聞かれる。

Bobby: うん。僕が初めてここに来た時…それすなかったよ「銃もってる？」代わりに「銃何個持ってるの？」あれはどう…「アメリカの女子は簡単？」

Kristina: それおもしろいね、だって日本人女性が簡単だってステレオタイプあるじゃない？

Bobby: …アメリカの男性にね…

Kristina: あぁ。それは国のどこにいるかによると思う…それによって結構セックスに関してはオープンな女性もいるね。でも他の地域ではかなり保守的な人もいるしね。

Bobby: 変なのもう1つあるよ。

Kristina: 何？

Bobby: 何人かの日本人に言われたことあるのが…いや…聞かれたのが…アメリカに爪楊枝あるかないか。

Kristina: 本当？

Bobby: 日本が爪楊枝発明したって思ってる人多いんだよね。それって目に見えるか見えないかって問題だと思う。だって日本だとさ爪楊枝ってテーブルに置いてあるじゃん、でもアメリカだとレジにあるじゃん。だから、テーブルに置いてないと、日本人は見えないのかな。見えないから…ないって勝手に判断しちゃうんじゃない。

Kristina: 靴については？

Bobby: 靴？あ、やろう！うん！だってそれも違うじゃん！僕は…靴脱いでたよ、僕の家族は、中に入ると。

Kristina: うん、私のも。

Bobby: でも脱がない家族も結構いるじゃん。その靴脱ぐ文化ってさ畳の影響が強いと思うんだよね。

Kristina: うん。

Bobby: 畳って綺麗にするの難しいじゃん。

Kristina: そうだね。

Bobby: 畳に泥とかあったらもう終わりじゃん。

Kristina: 終わりだね。

Bobby: 日本に来る前にどんなイメージ抱いてた？

Kristina: えっと…日本に来る前、日本の事でよく出ていたのがねサムライ映画とネットでの画像だけだったの。それも中年男性がセーラームーンのコスプレしてピンクや水色のウィッグ被ってて、女子のコスチューム着てたの。だからそういう人が日本中走り回ってたのかと思ってた。

Bobby: そういう画像って探さなきゃネットで見ないと思うよ。僕は日本人が…日本人皆が勉強できると思ってた。勉強好きで、頭よくて、子供も行儀が良いって。アメリカと一緒でさ。良い子もいるし、そうじゃない子もいる。厳しい学校もあれば、酷い学校もある。

Kristina: うん。

Bobby: でも今思うと、日本がこんなに飲む国だってイメージはなかったね。どのくらい飲むことが日本で大事かってことは来るまで知らなかった。

Kristina: 私もビックリした。興味深かったのがね、ここでは先輩と飲みに行くと全部払ってくれるの！でも同じ意味で…それでパワハラもあって、無理矢理飲まされたりして、電車で気失って家にたどり着かないとか。

Bobby: 義務だもんね。海外からの人とあったことあると、勝手にイメージしたり想像するのは普通だもんね。でもその人にどんな人なのかを見せるチャンスを与えて。だからもう勝手にアメリカ人皆が僕みたいにハンバーガーを毎日食べるって思わないで、その人がどういう人なのかっていうのを見せるチャンスを与えて。

Kristina: うん、だってそうしなかったら…私日本で会った人が皆密かにクローゼットがコスチュームでいっぱいって勝手に決めちゃうもん。

Bobby: それって君が間違ったサイトを見てたからだと思うよ。

Kristina: それか正しいやつ…
