来週はクリスマスですね。皆さん楽しみですか？今回はアメリカと日本で過ごし方がどう異なるか、それについて話してみました。

Junko: So, Kristina, what are your plans for Christmas this year?

Kristina: Oh, well, I can’t go back home so I’ll probably spend it here.

Junko: Oh really? Me too.

Kristina: So I guess we should prepare for Christmas in Japan. I spent Christmas in Japan last year.

Junko: Oh you did?

Kristina: Yea. You know what we did?

Junko: What?

Kristina: We had KFC.

Junko: Let’s go get some KFC!

Kristina: Alright!

Junko: So now that we have KFC, what else do we need in order to make Christmas proper?

Kristina: In Japan?

Junko: Yes.

Kristina: I believe we need cake.

Junko: Cake! Good thing there’s one right here!

Kristina: Welcome to the Chocolate Salon. After you!

Junko: Why thank you! Cake!

Kristina: So, for whatever reason, KFC’s super duper popular here for Christmas. Ready? Merry Christmas!

Junko: Merry Christmas! I miss you mom!

Kristina: I miss you too mom! So, what would you eat at home, if you were spending Christmas with the family?

Junko: Turkey, maybe ham. Um…kind of like what we, what you would eat for Thanksgiving. Mashed potatoes, vegetables, um, pie. What about you?

Kristina: Um, we really like meat. So we would have um, honey ham, spareribs, my mom would cook lasagna. I mean, we would have a lot of fruits too, but uh, yea, definitely lots of different dishes. It was basically whatever we felt like. But always honey ham.

Junko: I feel like it’s either ham or turkey for Christmas.

Kristina: Yea, definitely.

Junko: It’s interesting to think that it’s such a commercial holiday here in Japan. I mean I know that…you know, Christmas is associated with religion in America.

Kristina: That’s true. And vacation.

Junko: And vacation. And I think that’s why so many families spend it together. But in Japan, it’s not religiously based. And so a lot of people do work on Christmas day. It is, a couples holiday. And if you spend it alone, or if you don’t have like, someone to spend it with, you’re kinda considered a loser.

Kristina: Wow! Really? Why so harsh?

Junko: I think it’s the whole status thing you know?

Kristina: I understand people not celebrating Christmas for religious reasons, and you don’t have to celebrate Christmas, but I think that the idea of it now, at least, is just about being with people you care about. But I guess that’s what お正月is in Japan.

Junko: Christmas is the day where couples get together, they buy KFC, they eat cake and then they go to love hotels, and…they…

Kristina: Bang! So, love hotels do pretty well here in Japan. Love hotels and romantic gifts, I suppose.

Junko: KFC.

Kristina: KFC.

Junko: So, we also got CAKE! …because, what is Christmas without cake, right? Cake time!

Kristina: Cake time! Let’s eat! いただきます。

Junko: いただきます。

Kristina: So, now that we’ve completed the cake tradition, um…why is it for couples only?

Junko: I think that…

Kristina: I mean, because we already have Valentines day here, and, White day.

Junko: You know, traditionally, I don’t think there are a lot of gift giving holidays in the buddhist…in buddhism and in shintoism? And so, along with the western influence, they brought it over. And here in Japan, recently, there has been this whole anti-Christmas movement. You know, for people who don’t have a significant other to spend the holidays with.

Kristina: That sounds like something that would be for Valentines day in America.

Junko: Definitely. If you don’t have a girlfriend or boyfriend on Valentines day, you’re a loser!

Kristina: I think it’s just, the meaning of Christmas has become jumbled, I mean, and it kind of has…definitely has in America as well. Like, Christmas isn’t about the presents. We love getting presents. Who doesn’t. But…it really is supposed to be about the time spent with the people who are in your life and make it important.

So, what’s a good Christmas gift here in Japan.

Junko: Something expensive.

Kristina: Oh, ok. I always just make my gifts.

Junko: I usually, did in the past also.

Kristina: So what about you guys?

Junko: What do you think about Christmas? Do you celebrate Christmas?

Kristina: Do you celebrate with your family? Do you celebrate with a loved one?

Junko: Or friends?

Kristina: And, have you ever made a gift? Would you mind getting a gift that someone made for you, or would you prefer something store bought?

Junko: そうなの？私も。

Kristina: それじゃ日本でクリスマス過ごす準備しなくちゃね。去年もクリスマスここで過ごしたの。

Junko: そうなの？

Kristina: うん。何したか分かる？

Junko: 何？

Kristina: ケンタッキー食べたの。

Junko: じゃ、ケンタッキー買いに行こう！

Kristina: うん！

Junko: これでケンタッキーあるから、クリスマスをちゃんと過ごすには他に何が必要？

Kristina: 日本で？

Junko: うん。

Kristina: ケーキが必要だと思います！

Junko: ケーキ！ちょうどここにあるね！

Junko: まぁ、ありがとう！ケーキ！

Kristina: それでね、なぜかは分からないんだけど、ここではケンタッキーってクリスマスの時にすごく人気なの。いい？メリークリスマス！

Junko: メリークリスマス！お母さん会いたいよ！

Kristina: 私も会いたいよ！で、実家にいたら何食べるの、もしクリスマスを家族と過ごしてたら？

Junko: ターキー、ともしかしたらハム。えっと…まぁ、サンクスギビングで食べる物に似てるよね。マッシュドポテト、野菜、えぇ、パイ。あなたは？

Kristina: えっとね、お肉がすごく好きなの。だからハニーハムとか、スペアリブ、お母さんラザニアも作るの。その他にフルーツもたくさんあったり、えっと、うん、いろんな料理が。食べたいものをとにかく食べてた感じ。でもハニーハムはいつもあった。

Junko: クリスマスってハムかターキーだよね。

Kristina: うん、そうだね。

Junko: 面白いと思うのがさ、日本だとすごく商業的な祝い事なんだよね。それはわかってるんだけど…それに、アメリカだとクリスマスは宗教とつながってるじゃん。

Kristina: 確かに。それと休みね。

Junko: それと休み。だからだと思うんだよね、家族揃って一緒に祝うのって。でも日本だと、宗教とか関係ないじゃん。だからクリスマスに働く人も多いんだよね。それに、カップルが一緒に過ごす日じゃん。それで一人で過ごしたり、一緒に過ごす人がいなければ、なんか、負け組って思われるんだよね。

Kristina: えぇ！本当？何でそこまで？

Junko: たぶんステータスとかじゃないの？

Kristina: クリスマスを宗教的に祝わないのは理解できるし、クリスマス祝わなくてもいいと思うし、でも今の目的ってさ、一緒にいる人と過ごす時間が重要じゃない。でも日本だとお正月があるもんね。

Junko: クリスマスはカップルが一緒に過ごす日で、ケンタッキー買って、ケーキ食べて、ラブホに行って…それで…

Kristina: セックスする！日本ではラブホって結構売上良いよね（時期的に）。ラブホとロマンチックなプレゼントとかね。

Junko: ケンタッキー。

Kristina: ケンタッキー。

Junko: でね、私達もケーキ買ったの！…だってね、ケーキがなければクリスマスじゃないんでしょ？ケーキの時間！

Kristina: ケーキの時間！食べよう！いただきます。

Junko: いただきます。

Kristina: これでケーキの伝統を果たしたとこで、えぇ…何でカップルだけなの？

Junko: それはさ…

Kristina: なんだろう、だって、もうバレンタインデーあるじゃん、それと、ホワイトデー。

Junko: 文化的にさ、プレゼントを渡す祝日ってさあまりないじゃない、仏教に…仏教と神道？それで、欧米の影響とかで、持ってきたんだと思う。でね、日本では、最近ね、アンチクリスマスのムーブメントがあるの。なんか、一緒に祝日を過ごせる人がいない人とかのために。

Kristina: なんかそれってアメリカのバレンタインデーにあるような感じじゃん。

Junko: 確かに。もし彼女か彼氏がバレンタインデーにいなければ、あなたは負け組だよ！

Kristina: たぶんさ、クリスマスの意味ってゴチャゴチャになちゃったんだよね、だって、ちょっとはさ…いや、アメリカでもかなりね。だって、クリスマスってプレゼントの為じゃないじゃん。まぁ、プレゼントもらうの好きだけど。みんなそうじゃん。でも…本来は一緒に過ごす人との時間が一番重要じゃない。

ねぇ、日本ではどんなプレゼントがいいの？

Junko: 高いもの。

Kristina: あ、そう。私はいつもプレゼント作ってた。

Junko: 前は私も作ってた。

Kristina: みなさんはどうですか？

Junko: クリスマスのことどう思う？クリスマス祝う？

Kristina: 家族を祝う？恋人と祝う？

Junko: それか友達？

Kristina: それと、プレゼント作ったことある？誰かが作ったプレゼントか、お店で買ったプレゼントどっちもらいたい？
