もうすぐバレンタインデー。日本にやってきて間もないJeff がMichael にある相談事をします。アメリカと日本のバレンタイン事情の違いを英語で学びましょう！

It’s almost Valentines day! Jeff, who hasn’t been in Japan for too long, asks Michael for some advice. Let’s learn about the differences in the Valentines culture between America and Japan!

Jeff: C’mon Michael!

Michael: It’s been awhile!

Jeff: It has…since…Happy New Year!

Michael: Yea! Happy New Year!

So uh, you look different.

Jeff: Yea, I cut my hair off, you know. The man buns out, man.

Michael: Already?

Jeff: Yea, I’m a health goth.

Uh, Michael, I uh…need some…advice. Man advice.

Michael: I’m so manly. I’m here for you man.

Jeff: Thank you. I know. That’s why I came to you.

Um…I’m thinking about getting some chocolates for Daria and, you know, since, I’m pretty new to Japan, do you have any like, suggestions for like where I could get chocolate? Like good chocolate, you know? I want to impress her.

Michael: You just wanna give her chocolate?

Jeff: Yea

Michael: Just like, hey! Here’s some chocolate!

Jeff: No! For Valentines Day.

Michael: Wh..wha…what? Why?

Jeff: Cause Valentines Day is coming up. It’s next week. And so…I want to get her some chocolates. That’s what you do.

Michael: Nnnnnno! Nooooo! Ahhh! Not like that! Not in Japan, man. You just get chocolates! I mean, girls give you chocolates here.

Jeff: What?

Michael: Yea! Yea! I mean, I’ve been leaving Sarah some subtle hints about uh…buying me chocolates. You know, just…leaving pamphlets of chocolate stores in her bag, under her pillow, and on her mirror, on her Satan worship table…

No, here in Japan, for Valentines Day, the girls give guys chocolates.

Jeff: Guys can’t give girls chocolates?

Michael: I mean, they can, but that’s like on White Day.

Jeff: What’s White Day?

Michael: Uh, it’s like March 14^th, and actually you give candy back. You know, it’s kinda like…well thank you for the chocolate sweet thaaaang. Here’s some sweetness for you! Boo!

Jeff: But…what if…why?

Michael: I don’t…I don’t know. That’s just how it works here.

Jeff: Does that mean that I have to wait until March to give Daria something?

Michael: Well, I mean, you could always give her something on a regular day.

Jeff: What if Daria doesn’t get me anything for Valentines Day? Can I still get her candy for White Day?

Daria’s your friend.

Michael: Yea, I know. I’m pretty sure she will. I mean, when we worked in the…when we had class together, she gave everyone chocolate. She was really nice.

Jeff: So…I mean like, if she’s giving everyone chocolates, how do I know that she…likes me?

Michael: Well…I mean, it’s kind of like, you give candy in return and then you can ask her out.

Jeff: Ok.

So like…so in Japan, it’s…girls give the guys chocolates. That’s really weird because like, in America, guys give girls chocolates usually. Unless you’re like, dating.

Michael: Yea, then you get like expensive presents right?

Jeff: Yea.

Do you give candy back to every girl that gives you chocolate? Cause uh…he’s pretty popular, you know?

Michael: Well…yea, you should. It’s only, it’s only proper. But you know, the chocolate…or the candy that I’m gonna give Sarah is going to be special. I’m gonna make it!

Jeff: Awe, that’s so sweet man!

Michael: I know, I really love her. Shhhh! Don’t tell her though.

Jeff: I won’t.

Michael: She might get mad.

Jeff: She probably…she’s probably around here anyways.

Michael: I know! She’s always around!

Jeff: It’s kind of cold now. Do you want to go back to my place? I’ve been growing some kambucha.

Michael: Kambucha?

Jeff: Yea! Let’s go!

Jeff: 早く、Michael

Michael: 久しぶりだな！

Jeff: そうだな…あれ以来…あけましておめでとう！

Michael: あぁ！あけましておめでとう！

なんか、変わったな。

Jeff: あぁ、髪の毛切ったんだ、だって、髪の毛上げるのって、もうトレンドじゃないからな。

Michael: もう？

Jeff: うん、今はヘルス・ゴスだよ。

で、Michael、俺…ちょっと欲しいんだよな…アドバイス。男のアドバイス。

Michael: 僕、男前だから。いつでもいるからな。

Jeff: ありがとう。だからお前に聞きに来たんだ。

でな…考えてたのが、Dariaにチョコレートあげたいんだ、それに、俺さ、日本来たばかりだから、チョコレート買えるお店のおすすめとかない？良いチョコレート、とかな？感動させたいんだ。

Michael: 普通に彼女にチョコレートあげたいの？

Jeff: うん。

Michael: こう、やぁ！はい、チョコレートだよ！

Jeff: 違うよ！バレンタインのために！

Michael: え…え…え？何で？

Jeff: だって、バレンタインってもうすぐじゃん。来週だし。それで…チョコレートあげたいんだ。普通だろう。

Michael: うーーーーーん！ううんんんん！あぁ！そうじゃないよ！日本じゃ違うんだ！チョコレートもらうんだ。いや、女子からチョコをもらうんだよ。

Jeff: 何？

Michael: そう！そう！だって、だからSarahに小さいヒントとかをさ巻いてるの…僕にチョコレート買ってって。こう、なんか…チョコレートのお店のパンフレットとかを鞄の中や、枕の下とか、鏡にとか、サタンテーブルとか…

日本では、バレンタインは女子が男子にチョコレートをあげるんだ。

Jeff: 男子は女子にチョコレートあげられないの？

Michael: いや、あげれるけど、それはホワイトデーとかにな。

Jeff: ホワイトデーって何？

Michael: えぇ、３月１４日とかで、本当はキャンディを返すの。ほらさ、こう…まぁ、チョコありがとうよ、優しい（甘い）君。お返しに君にも甘い物を！Boo！

Jeff: でも…もしさ…何で？

Michael: わか…わからない。でもここはこうなんだ。

Jeff: それじゃさ、Dariaに何かをあげるのに３月まで待たなくちゃいけないってこと？

Michael: まぁ、そりゃ、普通の日にも何かあげられるじゃん。

Jeff: もしさ、Dariaがバレンタインに何もくれなかったら？それでもホワイトデーにキャンディあげてもいいの？

Dariaはお前の友達だろ。

Michael: うん、そうだよ。もらえるんじゃない。だって、一緒に働いてた…一緒の授業とってたとき、みんなにチョコレート渡してたもん。彼女すごく優しいよ。

Jeff: じゃ…それじゃさ、みんなにチョコレートわたしてるんだったら、どうやって俺のことが…好きかわかるの？

Michael: えっと…それはさ、こうさ、キャンディを返してから告白すればいいんだよ。

Jeff: そっか。

なんか…日本では…女子が男子にチョコレートをあげる。それってすごく変だよ、だって、アメリカとかって男子が普通女子にチョコレートあげるんだぜ。付き合ってるなら別だけど。

Michael: あぁ、そうだったら高いプレゼントあげるんだろ？

Jeff: うん。

キャンディってチョコレートもらった女子みんなに返してる？だってさ…こいつ結構人気でね？

Michael: そりゃ…あぁそうだな。それが礼儀ってもんだから。でもね、チョコレート…じゃなくて、キャンディね、Sarahにあげるのは特別。僕、作るから！

Jeff: へぇ、それってすごく思いやりだな！

Michael: うん、すごく大好きなんだ。しー！でも言うんじゃねーぞ！

Jeff: 言わねーよ。

Michael: 彼女怒るかもしれないから。

Jeff: 彼女たぶん…彼女たぶんここらへんにいると思うし。

Michael: そうだよな！彼女いつもいるもん！

Jeff: なんか寒くなったよな。俺のとこ戻らない？最近カンブッチャ育ててるんだ。

Michael: カンブッチャ？

Jeff: あぁ！行こう！

Health goth
これは去年末に現れた新しいファッショントレンドです。ミュージシャン、Mike GrabarekとJeremy Scottが未来っぽいファッションの写真などをネット上にあげて、それに続きモノクロームで未来っぽいファッションスナップなどを上げ始めたフォロワーが一気に増えました。普通の「goth・ゴス」とは違い、「heath goth」は得に自分の身体や見た目に注意しています。

Sweet thaaaang
ここの「thaaaaang」は「thing」と同じです。アメリカの南の州などのアクセントで良く「thing」が「thang」と発音されています。「sweet thing」の直訳は「甘い物」ですが、意味としてはナンパするときに言う「君」です。「優しい」「美しい」「可愛い」見た目と正確が「甘い」意味です。

It’s only proper
これは「礼儀正しい」の意味です。動画内でJeffがMichaelにキャンディをみんなに返すの？と聞いて、Michaelは「It’s only proper」と返事します。それは、チョコ貰ったのだから、お返しするのは礼儀正しいでしょう。の意味です。

Kambucha
以前Listn.meでも紹介した発行されたお茶です。今アメリカで健康ブームの元になってるカンブッチャです。
