日本ではまだまだ人気のfacebook. アメリカと日本の facebook 利用に違いがあるのかを海外の友人も多い Megumi と Mari が語ります。話の中心は仕事とプライベートの関係をどう分けるか？に集中しました。

Facebook is still popular in Japan. Megumi and Mari who have many foreign friends talk about the difference in the facebook usage between America and Japan. How to separate your private and work like?

Mari: What’s your name?

Megumi: My name is Megumi.

Megumi: What are we talking about today?

Mari: Facebook!

Megumi: Usage in Japan…

Mari: And U.S.A.

Megumi: And U.S.A.

Mari: Yea.

Megumi: How is it different?

First of all, how about the big one? Like we are just talking about…do we connect or do we friend our office people or people who we work with?

Mari: So,

Megumi: In Japan, do we friend request the people who we work with?

Mari: Well honestly, a lot of my Japanese friends told me that they have a lot of work friends on Facebook. And they don’t like it because they has, they post a lot of things like drunk pictures…

Megumi: Not that you should post drunk pictures on Facebook I think. That just maybe not smart thing to do when you’re adult. but I mean yea…I think that’s weird.

Mari: But still sometimes you wanna show

Megumi: Oh yea like personal…

Mari: you have fun, you had a shot, whatever. But like… imagine if your boss is looking on your Facebook, you can’t right?

Megumi: They would think really…oh~ like “Is this girl ok?” “Is this trust worthy and stuff?” I guess you know that’s really different when you look at from the U.S.A. perspective. I’ve never worked at the foreign environment before. But I know that in the U.S.A they are…they use Linkedin, which is a website that you connect with people professionally when you are…um…working. So it’s a really professional level.

Mari: It’s all about connections.

Megumi: Uh huh. Yea. It’s about connecting to each other but it’s not like reviewing your whole private life into like those people.

Mari: No no.

Megumi: And I think that is very smart way how to connect with your co-workers.

Mari: Yea and also like separate your private life and you know…

Megumi: I mean it’s much more healthier like…I would freak out if I have to like always have to be like think about ”oh my god if my co-workers look at this pictures, definitely like freak out.”

Mari: So like one way you can make a list on Facebook and you can put people in a list and you can exclude those like…list, to share with. But I think it’s really tiring…

Megumi: Yea it is.

Mari: and annoying right?

Megumi: It’s just social media. Why do we have to use my time to just…That’s true.

Do… um any Japanese people use Linkedin? I don’t think not much people even know it.

Mari: Well I have a kind of a lot of friends, have account but they are not active.

Megumi: Yeah I don’t even know people who know…

Mari: Cause like…

Megumi: Linked in.

Mari: It’s useless here.

Megumi: I feel like finally most of the people started doing Facebook, finally.

Mari: Yea.

Megumi: Like everyone now has a Facebook account in Japan. Facebook is coming a little bit, you know, not so much of popular social media platform any more compare to Instagram now. Because I saw the joke ones that teenage girl in America they will like “Who uses Facebook any more.” You know? To be honest, I don’t remember when was the last time I post pictures on Facebook.

Mari: Really?

Megumi: No, I don’t remember. That’s how much I don’t act…I just look at…look through people’s news feed. But I never like do Facebook that much any more to be honest. I do much more Instagram. I feel like a lot of my Japanese friends do a lot of posting pictures still though, right?

Mari: Yea yea.

Megumi: Still pretty much active.

Mari: I post a lot of pictures but mainly like I share the link of this channel.

Megumi: Oh yeah, uh huh.

Mari: Yeah and I also like when I look at Facebook, I just look at the link of business insider or like buzzfeed, it’s really hot.

Megumi: When I studied abroad two years ago in Seattle, everybody is like sharing articles, sharing this and that. They are like talking about “I think about this and this. What do you guys think?” Actually Facebook is how I get my news information and stuff how I know about the world right now.

Mari: Can I tell you something?

Megumi: Yeah. Go.

Mari: Like a lot of Japanese people say “Oh can I please share this link? Thank you.” when they share the link. I think it’s really polite but I think at the same time, it’s really funny.

Megumi: It’s so cute.

Mari: They don’t really have to like say that in a comment list, you know?

Megumi: “May I share this link, sir, ma’am?” “Yes, you may.” Where is someone says “no” ?! God.

Mari: No.

Megumi: That’s really Japanese.

Mari: It’s not even the question. It’s like “Can I please share this thanks.” Period.

Megumi: Yea, it’s a little awkward if people who I work with are friends with me on Facebook to be honest. I do feel a little uncomfortable about that. But we both are like not saying which is better Japanese with better U.S.A way but…

Mari: But in my opinion, I just wanna, yea…keep separated them.

Megumi: Yeah that’s true. Private life and social media…uh…I mean your work life should be separated for sure.

Megumi: どう違うの？まず、一番大きい違いについては？今話してたような…私たち日本人は、一緒に働いてる人たちとFacebookで友達になる？

Megumi: 日本では、一緒に働いてる人に友達申請する？

Mari: んー正直に言うと、たくさんの日本人の友達が一緒に働いてる人とFacebookで友達だって言ってた。でも彼らはそのことをよく思ってない。だって、飲み会の写真とか投稿してるし…

Megumi: 飲み会の写真とかをFacebookにあげるのは、私はすべきじゃないと思うけど。それってちょっとスマートじゃないもんね、大人として。ちょっと変だと思う。

Mari: でも、たまには見せたくなるじゃん、

Megumi: まあね、個人的なね

Mari: 楽しかったこととか、ショットを飲んだこととか、何でも良いんだけど。でも、もしボスがこの投稿を見てたらって想像したら、出来ないよね？

Megumi: うー彼らはきっとこう思うよね…「この子大丈夫かな？」「信用できるのかな？」おそらくアメリカ人の感覚からしたら全然違うよね。海外で働いたことはないけど、U.S.A.の人たちが職場で、Linkedinっていう職業上人々が繋がるサイトを使ってるってことを知ってる。すごく職業的な基準で。

Mari: それは全部連絡についてなんだよね。

Megumi: そうそう。それは、人々を繋げるためのもので、自分の私生活を見せるためのものじゃない。

Mari: 違う、違う。

Megumi: これって一緒に働いてる人たちを連絡をとるのにすごく賢い方法だと思う。

Mari: うん、それに、私生活と仕事を分けられるし…

Megumi: とっても健康的だよね…もしいつも「ああ、もし仕事仲間がこの写真見たらびっくりするんだろうな」なんて考えなきゃいけなかったら、びくびくしちゃうもん。

Mari: ひとつだけ、Facebookでリストを作って、そこに人をいれて、その人たちだけ共有できないようにとかできるけど…それってすごく疲れるし、

Megumi: うん、疲れる。

Mari: いらいらするよね。

Megumi: ただのsocial mediaなのに。なんで、私たちが自分の時間割かなきゃいけないの？その通りだよね。

Linkedinを使ってる日本人いる？そもそも知らない人がほとんどだと思うのだけど。

Mari: んーアカウントを持ってる人たちは知ってるけど、全然使ってない。

Megumi: うん、Linkedinを知ってる人すら知らないもん…

Mari: だって、日本ではあまり使い道がないから。

Megumi: 私は、やっとみんながFacebookを始めたなって感じる、やっと。

Mari: Yea.

Megumi: 日本で、やっと全員がFacebookのアカウントを持ってるなって感じ。Facebookってでも、そこまで有名なsocial mediaじゃなくなってきてない？Instagramに比べると。アメリカの10代の子達が「誰がFacebookなんて使うの？」って言ってるの見たよ。正直、私も自分が最後に写真を投稿したのがいつかって覚えてない。

Mari: まじ？

Megumi: うん、覚えてない。どれほど私が…私、その、みんなのnews feedを見たりはするけど。でも、正直に言って、そこまでFacebookやってない。Instagramの方がやってる。私の日本人の友達はまだFacebookでもたくさん投稿してるけどね。

Mari: そうだね。

Megumi: まだ全然使ってる。

Mari: 私もたくさん写真投稿するけどね、だいたいこのchannelについてかな。

Megumi: ああ、そうだよね。

Mari: うん、あと私がFacebookを見るときって、Business InsiderとかBuzzFeedとか見てる。あれすごくいい。

Megumi: 2年前にSeattleで留学してたとき、みんなやるのが、記事を共有したり、これ見てみてとか。彼らは「私はこう思うんだけど、みんなはそう思う？」みたいなの。実際、Facebookって、私がニュースとか、世界について知るところになってる。

Mari: ちょっといい？

Megumi: いいよ。いけ。

Mari: 日本の人たちって、リンクを共有するときに「共有させてもらっていいですか？ありがとう。」って言うの。それってすごく礼儀正しいと思うんだけど、私は同時にすごく面白いなって思う。

Megumi: すごく可愛い。
