Bobby Judo の idiom 講座３回目は、洋楽に出てくる idiom です。例えば “Shake it off”. ピンと来た人もいますか？テイラー・スウィフトの人気曲ですね。この他にも会話で使える idiom を今回も紹介します！

Hey guys ! My name is Bobby Judo and today I’m here on Listn,me where I’ll be helping you practice your English listening skills and introducing you to some common,natural,English expressions.

This month, we’re talking about idioms and this week: it’s idioms from popular songs.

Let’s get right into it, number one is :

SHAKE IT OFF.

Taylor Swift’s incredibly popular song, “Shake it off ”.

You know it, you’ve heard it, you’ve probably sung along with it,maybe even danced with it.

But do you know what she’s singing about?

Yes, “Shake it off” also refers to the way she’s dancing but message in her song is this:

You shouldn’t care about the negative things that come your way in life. When people around you say negative things or bad things happen you should shake those things off which means :

Don’t let them bother you. Ignore them or forget about them.

There’s another similar idiom, “walk it off ”.

“Shake it off ” and “wall it off ”. “Walk it off ” means pretty much the same thing.

If you’re playing sport, or running, or doing anything and you fall and you hurt yourself, someone might tell you “Walk it off” which means “ Walk”. Move around until the pain goes away.

Move around until you start to feel better.

But you can use this not only for injuries, but for emotional pain as well. For example,if you have a friend who’s dumped by their boyfriend or girlfriend you can say “Shake it off” or “Walk off it”.

Keep moving, keep going, until you feel better.

Don’t let the negative things bring you down.

Number two is:

LET SOMEONE DOWN

You can hear this one in the song “Let you down” by Rita Ola.

In the chorus, she sings “I will never let you down”. This is an easy one, because the idea of down is clearly something negative, so to let someone down means to disappoint someone.

To do something to make them sad,or to hurt them or break someone’s trust.

A very common example of this that you see ALL THE TIME in movies and TV shows,when a kid says “My dad was supposed to come to my baseball game but he let me down again”. Got it?

IT’S A LET DOWN

You can also take out the person in the middle of it. Let “me” down or let “someone” down.

You can say,uh, “Something is a let-down”,which means it’s a disappointment.

“I couldn’t wait to try that new restaurant, but it turned out to be a big let-down.

And you can also use it positively, like Rita does in the song.

When you make a new deal, or you meet someone, or you get a new job,you’re working with someone, you can say “Trust me. I promise I won’t let you down”.

Number three.

Number three is the last one and the hardest one for today.It is:

WRAPPED AROUND ONE’S FINGER

To have something or someone wrapped around one’s finger.

You can hear this one in the song “Wrapped Up” by Olly Murs.

If I have something wrapped around my finger, it’s like this, right? It’s literally,actually wrapped around my finger. But in Olly Murs’s song, he sings “She’s got ME wrapped around HER finger”.

How can you wrap a person around someone’s finger? You can’t. It’s not literal. But the idea here is that if this is wrapped around my finger it goes wherever I want it to go. It moves however I want it to move. I can do whatever I want with it. I control it just as much as I control my own finger.

So when he says he’s wrapped around her finger, he means he likes her so much, she’s in total control of him. To have someone wrapped around your finger means to control them completely. It gets used a lot with boyfriends and girlfriends because it’s closely related to feelings of love. If you love someone you do anything for them. “He does everything she wants. He gives her everything she wants. He’s totally wrapped around her finger”.

But you can also use it for other relationships too.“Those parents are in trouble. Their son is so cute, and so spoiled. He has both of them wrapped around his finger”.

SHAKE IT OFF.振り払う。断ち切る（どんまい）

みんな知っているし、聞いた事ある人もいますよね、もしかしたら歌ったりとかそれでダンスした事ある人もいるんじゃないかな。
でも、みんなは彼女が何についての歌を唄っているか知っていますか？

そう、“Shake it off”はダンスの様子なんかも見せてくれているんだけど、彼女の歌にあるメッセージはこういうもの：
人生には自分にネガティブな事も降り掛かってくるけど気にしない方がいいよ。周りの人がネガティブな事を言って来たり嫌な事が起きたら、そんなの振り払っちゃえばいいよ、それってこういう事：彼らに振り回されないで。無視して、そんなの忘れてしまいなよ。

他にも似たイディオムがあります、 “walk it off ”「歩く」（立ち止まらないで）
“Shake it off ” と“wall it off ”。 “Walk it off ”も殆ど同じ意味です。スポーツだったり走っていたりとか、何かをしていて、失敗して落ち込んでいるとします、そしたら誰かがみんなに“Walk it off”と言うでしょう、それはつまり「（立ち止まらずに）歩いて」という意味なんです。傷が癒えるまでひたすら動き回ってよ。気持ちが上向くまでひたすら動き周りなよ。
でもこれは傷ついている人にだけではなくって、精神的な傷にも使えます。
例えば、友達がボーイフレンド、ガールフレンドに振られちゃったとしたら、みんな友達に「Shake it off（振り切って）」とか「walk it off（立ち止まらずに）歩きなよ」と言う事ができます。動き続けて、進み続けて、気持ちが上向くまで。ネガティブな事で自分の事を落ち込ませなくっていいんだよ。

その２：
LET SOMEONE DOWN　がっかりさせる

Rita Olaが唄う Let you downという歌の中で聞けます。
歌のコーラスで彼女は「もう決してあなたをがっかりさせないわ」これは簡単です、ダウンのその考え方がネガティブだという事がハッキリしているし、だからlet someone downというのは誰かを失望させるという意味になります。
悲しくさせたり、傷つけたり、誰かの心をぶち壊してしまったりする事。

一般的な例を挙げると映画でも本当によく見たりするし、テレビ番組でも、子供が「パパが一緒に野球してくれるって約束してくれてたのに、またボクの事がっかりさせたんだ」
わかりましたか？

これも人に対して使う事ができます。「私を」がっかりさせる、「誰かを」がっかりさせるもの。みんなはこうやって言えるよ、えーと、「何かがとても残念だ」、どういう意味かというと、それはがっかりだという事。
あの新しいレストランに行ってみたくて待ちきれなかったけど、かなりがっかりする所だっていう事が解ってしまった。
他にも、Rita が歌の中でもやっているようにポジティブに使う事も出来ます。
新しい取引だったり、誰かと会ったり、新しい仕事が決まった時なんかに、一緒にやりとりをしていて、こうやって言う事ができます、「私を信じてください。お約束します、みなさんの事をがっかりさせません。」

その３
３つ目が今日の一番最後のイディオムで、一番難しいです。それがこれ：
WRAPPED AROUND ONE’S FINGER　言いなりにする、手玉に取る

誰か、もしくは何かを言いなりにさせること。
これはOlly Mursの歌の中でも聞く事ができます。もし自分の指を何かで巻き付けたとすると、こんな感じに、ね？これは文字通り、実際に僕の指に巻いてある。でもOlly Mursの歌で彼は「She’s got ME wrapped around HER finger（僕は彼女のいいなりさ）」と唄っています。
どうやったら人の事を指に巻き付ける事が出来るのかって？出来ませんよ。正確には。でもこの考えの上では、自分の指に何かを巻き付けていれば、どうにでも自分のしたいように出来る。動かしたいと思えば動かせる。自在に何でも出来る。自分の持ってる指でいくらでも操る事ができちゃう。
だから、彼が he’s wrapped around her fingerと言った時には彼が彼女の事とても好きだから、彼女は完全に彼を支配している状況に居る。誰かを自分の指に巻き付ける、っていうのは。つまり、その人たちのことを完全に操るという意味。
これはけっこう、彼とか彼女に使われるんです、何故かというと、恋愛感情にかなり関連性があるから。誰かを大好きだったら、その人のためなら何でも出来る。「彼って彼女が望む事なんでもしちゃうよ。彼女が欲しがるものは何でもあげる。彼は完全に彼女の言いなりだよ。」でも、これ以外にも、別の関係にも使う事が出来ますよ。「親って困ったものだよ。自分の息子が可愛すぎるから、甘くなる。彼ら二人とも子供に転がされているよ。」
