Hey guys! I am Bobby Judo and today I’m here on the Listn.me channel to help you practice your English listening skills and to introduce some common English expressions that you might come across and that you might be able to use.

Today is the last in this month’s idiom series and it’s going to be kind of dark.

We’re going to be talking about some idioms related to death and some sexual idioms and talk about where those idioms came from.

First up today is a surprising one: RAINING CATS AND DOGS

I think most English learners come across this one: It’s raining cats and dogs.

This expression means: It’s raining very heavily.It’s raining very hard. But what does it have to do with cats and dogs? The problem is that this is such an old expression that no one really knows for sure where it comes from or why it started.

But a popular theory is that the writer Jonathan Swift was the first person to use this phrase in England in the 1700s. But then, he was in London, and London was a very dirty city,full of diseases and lots of stray cats and dogs.

When dogs and cats in the town would die, no one would collect them and bury them or clean it up, they would just die and stay in the street. So when there was a very very strong, very heavy rain,

the street s would flood with water and dead bodies of the dogs and cats would float through the town with the water, and one who saw that could imagine that they had that they had fallen from the sky like rain. So now today when we say “It’s really raining cats and dogs” , nobody is thinking about dead animal bodies. But it’s very possible that that gruesome scene is the origin of this idiom.

Another DEATH one: THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT

The graveyard shift.

A graveyard is a cemetery. A place where dead bodies are buries, right? But when we say the graveyard shit, which is very common. It means “late at night”. Very late at night or very early in the morning when most people are sleeping and the graveyard shift gets used to talk about having to work late at night. Like: When I was training to be a doctor, I had to work the graveyard shift at the hospital. It means “I had to work overnight at the hospital”. Or you could say “I hate taking taxies late at night because taxis drivers who work the graveyard shift are usually creepy.

………..Sorry, taxi drivers.

Uh, you can use it like that. But what does working at night have to do with a graveyard. Well, one theory says that this comes from the 1800s when, believe or not, it was a somewhat common problem to bury people who were still alive. So when people realized that this was happening they invented a bell system, where, if you work up one day and you were buried underground inside a coffin in a box, you could ring a bell from inside the coffin to let people above ground know that you were still alive.

So because of this there were some people who had the job of staying up all night in the graveyard to listen for the sound of the bell and dig people up if they had to. And that’s why graveyard shift means late night work. Other people say that this explanation is not true, and it’s just a story.

Alright, todays our last idiom. It is: WELL HUNG

Well hung.

This is a sexual one. Well hung means that the part of a man’s body…that hangs…down…between his legs is a good size. If you say “That guy is well hung” it means “that guy has a big dick”. And there’s a theory about the origin of this expression as well and it’s surprisingly dark.

The theory says that when men are killed by hanging when they are hung, whether they can’t breathe and they choke to death, or whether the shock of the drop snaps their neck or their spinal column it can cause blood in the body to rush away from the head and down to the lower body.

And when blood rushes to a man’s lower body it has a certain effect…that can make certain parts of that man…get bigger. So the theory says that people who were watching a hanging they were watching someone hung, could tell whether or not a man was well hung by looking for a change in his…pants. So again, super dark, super gruesome but just a theory.

Maybe it’s not really true. What do you think?

今日は今月のイディオムシリーズのラストになるんだけど、ちょっとダークな感じです。

死に関するもの、それからちょっとセックスと関わりのあるイディオムについてと、それがどこからそういう意味になったのかいくつか話そうと思っています。

今日一つ目はびっくりするやつです：RAINING CATS AND DOGS

英語を勉強している人だったらこれを見た事あるんじゃないかなと思います：It’s raining cats and dogs（土砂降り）

この表現が意味するのは：雨がかなり激しく降っている。ものすごい雨が降っている。

でも、どうして猫と犬なの？ここで問題になるのが、これは一種の古い表現でこの表現がどこから来てどうして使われ始めたのか実際によく知っている人も居ないという事です。

ただ、有名な一説では1700年代のイギリスでJonathan Swiftという作家が一番最初にこのフレーズを使ったんじゃないかと言われています。でも当時、彼はロンドンで生活をしていたんだけど、ロンドンってとても汚い街だった、病気もいっぱい、野良猫、野良犬も沢山いた。

犬や猫がこの街で死んでも、誰もそれらを回収しようともしない、埋めようともしないしちゃんと処理もしない、だから犬や猫が死んで、道にそのままにされていた。それで、すんごいすんごい強い、とてつもない雨が降ると道は水浸しになって、犬や猫の死骸が浮いて街の中をその水の流れに乗って流れてゆく、それを見た人が犬や猫たちもまるで雨みたいに降ってくるようだと想像をしたんじゃないかな。今では、人が“It’s really raining cats and dogs”って言っても、誰も動物の死骸の事は考えないです。

ただこのイディオムの元にあるのがぞっとそるシーンだっていうのはけっこうあり得る話かなと思います。

次に挙げるのは：

他の死に関するもので：THE GRAVEYARD SHIFT

夜勤

墓地はお墓がある場所。遺体が埋められている場所、でしょ？

でも人が the graveyard shitって言っている時、けっこうよくあるんです。意味は：「深夜」。真夜中、もしくは殆どの人が眠っている時間帯のかなり朝早い時間で、 the graveyard shiftは夜中に働かないといけないっていう話をするのによく使われていたんです。

こういう感じ：研修医だった頃、I had to work the graveyard shift at the hospital これは「病院で夜通し働かなくちゃならなかった」っていう意味。

あとは、こうやって言う事もできるよ、「夜勤のタクシーの運転手って本当にキモいから夜にタクシー拾うのって嫌なんだよね。」

・・・・・・・タクシーの運転手さん、ごめんなさい。

うん、あんな具合に使えるよ。でも夜中に働く事をなんで墓地で表現するのか？

それは、一説だと1800年代から来ていて、信じられない話かもしれないけど、わりとよくあった出来事でまだ生きている人を埋めちゃったっていう事があったんです。

その問題に気づいて彼らは鈴を鳴らす方法を考えたんです。ある日意識が戻って自分が棺に入れられて埋められていたなんて事があった場合には、棺の中から鈴を鳴らして地上に居る人に自分がまだ生きていますよっていう事を知らせる事ができたんです。

だから、こういった理由で墓地ではその鈴の音を聞くために夜も起きて働く人も何人か居て、必要な場合には、掘って人を地上に引き上げていたんですね。そういう訳で graveyard shiftというのが夜も働く、という意味になるんです。

人によってはこの説明は事実では無いよという人もいるので、これはほんの一説です。

みんなはどう思います？

それでは、今日私たちの最後のイディオムです。それは：WELL HUNG

ぶらさがってるもの

これは、セクシャルなやつです。 Well hungっていうのはつまり、男性のあそこ…あのぶら下がってる…下向きの…脚と脚の間にあるやつが、イイ大きさだっていうね。

“That guy is well hung”って言ったら、それって「あの男の子ってアソコが大きいの」っていう意味になります。またこの表現にも元の意味になる一説があってそれもかなりダークなんですよ。

一説だと男性が首つり刑で殺される時、宙づりにされると息ができなくて絞め殺されてしまったり、それとか振り落とされた時のショックで首や脊椎が折れたりすると、それで体内の血流が頭から下半身にまでどっと流れる。そうやっていっきに血流が下半身にいくと、明らかに影響あるよね…明らかに男性が持ってるあの部分が…大きくなる。

という事は、この説によるなら、絞首刑を見ている人は、人が吊るされるのを見る人っていうのは、男の人のあそこが大きくなってるかどうかっていうのはパンツの形が変わってるの見たら解っちゃいますよね。それもまた、超ダークでゾッとしますね、ほんの一説ですけどね。

こんなのは現実にはある話じゃないと思いますけどね。みんなはどう思いますか？
