My name is Bobby Judo, and today I’m starting my series for Listn.me

where I’ll be helping you practice your English speaking skills

and introducing you to some natural, common English expressions.

This month we’re going to be talking about idioms.

Do you know what idioms are?

Idioms are expressions that make sense to native speakers who are used to them

but often confuse language learners.

This is because the parts of the sentence, the literal meaning

the actual meaning of the words

doesn’t match up with the meaning of the expression.

Here’s an example of an idiom that gets used in both Japanese and English

Lend a Hand.

Lend a Hand

手を貸す

It means “Help me,” right?

That’s all it means. “Help me.”

But if you look only look at the actual words “Lend a hand”

How?

Cut off your hand and let someone borrow it? It doesn’t make sense, right?

So in this series I’ll be introducing you to some of these idioms.

Since we started with hands,

let’s look at three idioms that use body parts.

Idiom number one:

To “Get Cold Feet”.

This means to get nervous just before making a big decision or a big change.

It gets used a lot when talking about weddings.

“The bride got cold feet on the morning of her wedding.”

This is about me and it’s a true story.

I got cold feet before I moved to Japan…in 2006.

I got cold feet and I almost didn’t come,

but I’m really glad I did.

Idiom number two:

To “Bite your tongue.”

This one can be used literally.

If you actually do bite your tongue, feel free to say

“Ah! Shit! I bit my tongue!”

But when you use it as an idiom, it means

to stop yourself from saying something you want to say

or to shut up.

People do use it in place of “shut up.”

You can tell someone, “Bite your tongue!”

when you want to say “You should stop talking now!”

You can use it strongly, like “SHUT UP!”

or you can use it as a warning: “It’s better to stop talking.”

“You should bite your tongue.”

You can also use it like this:

“My friend is always talking about how much she loves Neil Patrick Harris and I have to bite my tongue. She doesn’t know he’s gay…and it would break her heart.”

All right, number three and the last one for today:

“Put your foot in your mouth.”

“Put one’s foot in one’s mouth.”

This is a weirder one.

And it means “to accidentally say something embarrassing.”

Have you ever seen the movie “Love, Actually?”

There’s a scene in “Love, Actually” where a waiter at a party

named Colin, si complaining about the food to someone he thinks is a guest when he’s ACTUALLY

talking to the caterer, the woman who MADE the food.

In this case, that’s a perfect example of HIM putting his foot in his mouth.

Or for example, if I was talking to a man at a bar or a restaurant

and I said, “Hey look at that hot girl over there. I bet I could get her phone number.”

and he said “That’s my daughter.”

That’s ME putting MY foot in MY mouth.

This is a really, really common expression and it’s used so often that

when someone says something very awkward

if you’re talking to someone and they say something very awkward

or very embarrassing, you can actually ask them “How does your foot taste?”

イディオムって知ってますか？

イディオムはネイティブスピーカたちにとっては通常ですが、

まだ勉強している方にとっては難しいことですね。

なぜなら文章と実際の意味

本来の言葉の意味

がフレーズと一致しないからです。

例を出すと、日本語でも英語でも使われるこれ…

Lend a Hand.

Lend a Hand

手を貸す

これは「手伝って」って意味でしょ？

ただそれ。「手伝って」

でも言葉だけをみると「手を貸す」

どうやって？

手を切り落として誰かに貸す？意味分からないでしょ？

なので、このシリーズでは僕はこのようなイディオムを紹介します。

手で始めたから、

身体を使った３つのイディオムを見ましょう。

最初のイディオム：

To “Get Cold Feet”.

「足が冷たくなる」

To “Get Cold Feet”.

これはなにか大きな出来事や選択肢を決める前に緊張することです。

結婚式などの時に一番使われます。

「花嫁が結婚式の朝に足が冷たくなった」

これは僕のことだけど、本当の話で、

日本に引っ越す前に足が冷たくなった…2006年に。

足が冷たくなりすぎて、なかなか来れなかった

でも来て本当に良かった。

2つ目のイディオム：

「舌を噛む」

To “Bite your tongue.”

「舌を噛む」

これは実際にも使えます。

本当に舌を噛んだ時に、自由にこれを使って…

「あぁ！クソ！舌噛んだ！」

でもイディオムとして使うと、意味は

何かを言い過ぎる前に自分を止める

黙らせる。

普段「黙る」の変わりに使われます。

誰かに「舌を嚙め(黙れ)！」って言えるし

「もう黙ったほうがいいよ」って言いたい時とか

強く言えるしね「黙れ！」みたいに

それか注意したいときにも使えます「そろそろ黙ったほうがいいんじゃない」

「舌噛んだほうがいいよ」

それかこのように使えます：

「僕の友達いつもNeil Patrick Harrisのこと大好きって話してるけど、舌噛まないといけないの。彼女彼がゲイだって知らなくて…知ったら心が折れちゃう。」
はい、3つ目、今回の最後のやつは：

「足を口に入れる」

“Put your foot in your mouth.”

「足を口に入れる」

これはおかしいやつですね。

で、意味は「間違えて恥ずかしいことを言っちゃった」

映画の「Love, Actually」って見たことあります？

「Love, Actually」の1つのシーンにあるパーティーのウェイター、

Colinって名前で、食べ物が酷いってゲストだと思ってた人に文句を言ってたんだけど、

実際はそのケーター、食事を作った女性の人だった。

この場合、最高な例で、彼が彼の足を口に入れてしまいましたね。

もう１つの例として、バーかレストランで男の人と話してて

僕が「あの可愛い女の子見てみ。彼女の番号絶対貰えると思うよ。」

それで彼が「俺の娘だ。」

それは僕が僕の足を僕の口に入れてます。

これは本当に本当に普段使われてるフレーズで、普通過ぎて

誰かが変なこと言ったとしても

誰かと話してて何か変なこと言われたら

それか恥ずかしいこと、その人に「足の味はどう？」って聞けます。
