Hey guys! I am Bobby Judo and I’m here on Listn.me’s channel to help you practice your English listening skills and to introduce you to some common English expressions that you might come across and that you might be able to use.

And today we’re going to be talking about idioms that involve animals.

First up today, idiom number one:

A fish out of water.

This one is easy to imagine. It means “someone or something that is out of place.” Just like a fish feels very comfortable and safe in water, and very very uncomfortable out of water. Most of us have places where we feel like we belong, and places that we don’t.

For example: My friend got invited to a party and she asked me to go with her. And when we got to the party though, we found out it was only for girls. I was the only guy there, and I felt like a fish out of water.

Actually, I wouldn’t mind that. That is an example I would be ok with.

How about umm…my dad is not a fancy person. He likes simple things and simple food. I took him to a really nice French restaurant but he was just a fish out of water.

Should’ve gone to Denny’s.

Next up, idiom number two:

To let the cat out of the bag.

Let the cat out of the bag.

This one is weirder. It means to tell a secret that you weren’t supposed to tell.

I asked my friend if he was looking forward to his birthday party next week but I didn’t know that it was a surprise party. I really let the cat out of the bag.

Or how about this, I wrote congratulations on your pregnancy on my friends Facebook wall, but she hadn’t told everyone yet. I let the cat out of the bag.

That reminds me, do you remember last weeks idioms? What about this example?

I asked my friend when she was going to have her baby. But, it turns out she wasn’t pregnant. Just fat. What idiom from last week could you use in this situation?

All right, back to today’s idioms. The last one we’re gonna do today is another animal one. This one is kind of dark.

Idiom number three:

To beat a dead horse.

When some people are riding a horse, and they want it to run faster, they hit it. And the more you hit a horse, the faster it will run. But sometimes the horse runs so hard that it dies…and in that situation, if you keep beating the horse, it means that you’re doing something pointless. You’re doing something meaningless in a hopeless situation.

So, a good example for this one would be…

He keeps texting his ex-girlfriend to get her back. But he’s just beating a dead horse.

Or, I already said no to that idea, so stop bringing it up. Now you’re just beating a dead horse.

Means you’re doing something pointless, you won’t let it go but it’s a hopeless situation.

それでは今日は、動物を使ったイディオムについて話をしようと思います。

まず今日の一番最初、イディオムその１：

A fish out of water.

場違い。

これはイメージしやすいと思う。これは“誰か、もしくは何かが場違いだ”っていう意味です。魚とかって水の中にいるととっても快適で安全だけど、水の外だと全然快適じゃないですよね。私達の多くは、自分が居てもいいなと思う場所と、そうではない場所がありますよね。

例えば：友達がパーティーに呼んでくれたので、彼女が一緒に行こうと誘ってきた。僕らでそのパーティーに行った時に女性しか居ないことに気づいた。そこでは自分だけしか男性が居なくて、場違いみたいに感じた。

まあ実際、僕はそんなの気にしませんけどね。これは僕なりにいいなと思える例です。

これはどうかな、んー…

私のお父さんはお洒落な人ではない。彼はただシンプルな物、シンプルな食事が好き。

私は彼をとっても素敵なフレンチレストランに連れて行ったのだけど、彼はひたすら場違いだった。Denny’s に行けばよかった。
