Mari: Sorry?
Andrew: Huh?
Mari: Oh wow! What? What do I do?
Andrew: Hi
Mari: Hi
Andrew: I’m Andrew.
Mari: Oh, I’m Mari.
Andrew: Oh, yea, I know, I saw you on the Listn.me site
Mari: Oh really? Oh thank you!
Andrew: I thought you were really cool, I…I had to meet you and talk to you.
Mari: Oh. That’s really nice of you, thank you.
So, how long have you been here?
Andrew: Uh, I’ve been in Tokyo for a little bit over two years now.
Mari: Ok, so…that means you can speak Japanese, right?
Andrew: Hm. I mean, a little bit. I can survive, but um…
Mari: How do you, how do you study Japanese here?
Andrew: Uh, you know when I first came here I was studying from the books and things like that. And I took like one semester once I got here, and I did have some experience in Osaka, actually.
Mari: What kind of experience?
Andrew: Uh, I went to school in Osaka and I think thats where I learned most of my Japanese.
Mari: Ok, so you just moved in Tokyo or what?
Andrew: Yea, yea, so I lived in Osaka, I went back to America for about a year and then came back to Tokyo. And during that year in America, I didn’t use Japanese much at all. And, with learning languages, its one of those use it or lose it kind of things. If you don’t practice it everyday, there it goes.
Mari: Yea, exactly.
Andrew: Where did it go? I don’t know!
But you speak English very well.
Mari: Oh, well, I lived in Australia when I was 17 years old and I was there for one year and um, yea, so after I got back to Japan, I …I just, you know, losing my…I was just losing my English and every single day because I had no one to talk to. So, yea I was like you.
Andrew: How did you um, um…I guess, brush up your English skills or keep your english skills over the years.
Mari: Yea, well, I wanted to talk about this topic today because everyone ask me how I keep English in Japan, you know. I tried to make a lot of friends…like foreigner friends and also I tried to watch a lot of American movies. I mean, it doesn’t have to be American but like…English movies and I try to watch the subtitled, the English subtitle, not the Japanese subtitle and I tried to understand and also I just forced myself into like…like the situation that I had to speak in English every single day you know? So, I got the part time job in the Aoyama area, and I was working for a bar and I needed to speak English to the staff because the staff were, everyones from overseas, and like, a lot of customers are from overseas, as well so I needed to speak English every single day. So that was good for me.
Andrew: I totally agree with that method. I think that is the best way, total immersion. And um, maybe being in a relationship with someone who speaks English or someone who speaks Japanese would be a good one too.
Mari: Yea, that’s better I guess.
Andrew: It helped me a little bit, um, I think, being with someone who speaks Japanese.
Mari: Oh nice!
Andrew: But…
Mari: But…what?
Andrew: It does get kind of embarrassing and you kind of…I don’t know. Maybe you don’t…
Mari: Because when you make mistakes or what?
Andrew: Yea, when you make mistakes they don’t tend to correct you very much.
Mari: Oh, ok.
So, I couldn’t speak English at all when I was 16 years old. But I really tried hard because I thought its cool you know, if you could speak English. When I make mistakes, I didn’t really care because everyone makes mistakes, you know? So, even now, if I find some words that I don’t know, I just ask, like, hey you know, like I don’t know this word. Can you describe that you know? Can you explain? Yea.
Andrew: Actually, I get the most practice probably at bars.
Mari: Oh wow
Andrew: Cause you know,
Mari: You mean, trying to pick up girls or what?
Andrew: No, no, not not that way. But um, because um, you know, you get a couple of drinks in you and like, you’re less hesitant. You’re not quite as shy, speaking
Mari: Right, cause the alcohol help you
Andrew: A second language, yea yea yea. Whereas maybe in regular conversations I meet somebody for the first time, I’m kind of afraid to make myself look kind of stupid, you know, and make mistakes.
Mari: You guys should go to the bars and like clubs, and get tipsy and talk to someone.

Andrew: To go to a bar, make a new friend, mix languages, take a picture
Mari: Mingle
Andrew: Yea, mingle, and uh, send it to us.
Mari: The picture.
Andrew: Yea.
Mari: Yea, of you and the foreigners around you.
Andrew: Yea, with a caption in your native language and a caption in their native language.
Mari: That would be nice.

Mari: あ、うわぁ！なに？何すればいいの？
Andrew: Hi
Mari: Hi

Mari: Mariです。

Mari: あ、本当？ありがとう！
Andrew: すごくクールだと思って…是非会って話したかったの。
Mari: あぁ、嬉しい、ありがとう。
それで、どのくらいここにいるの？
Andrew: えっと、東京には２年ちょっと
Mari: それじゃ…日本語話せるよね？
Andrew: うーん。まぁ、少しはね。生き延びる程度だけど…
Mari: どう…どうやって日本語の勉強してるの？
Andrew: 最初来た時は教科書とかから勉強してたよ。それと一学期くらい授業とってたけど、その前に大阪での経験が多かったから。
Mari: どんな経験？
Andrew: 大阪の学校に通ってて、そこで日本語一番学んだの。
Mari: あ、じゃ東京は最近引っ越してきたの？
Andrew: うん、うん、最初は大阪に住んでて、それでアメリカに1年ほど戻って、そしたら東京にきたの。それでアメリカにいた1年間、日本語ほとんど使わなかったの。で、言語学ぶときってさ、使わないとすぐ忘れちゃうじゃん。毎日勉強しないと、なくなっちゃう。
Mari: そう、その通り。
Andrew: どこいちゃったの？わからない！
でも、英語すごく上手だよね。
Mari: まぁ、私は１７歳のときにオーストラリアに1年ほど住んでて、それで、うん、日本に戻ってきて、私…なんか、全部なくなちゃって…
Andrew: どうやって、えっと…なんだろう、英語の勉強ってゆうかキープしたの？
Mari: うん、実はね、そのトピックについて今日話したかったの。みんなどうやって日本で英語を保ってるかいつも聞かれる。私はたくさん友達作って…外国の友達とか、あとアメリカの映画をたくさん見たの。いや、アメリカの映画じゃなくても…ただ、英語の映画で、字幕を英語にして、日本語字幕なしで、理解しようとして、自分を強制的に…英語を毎日話さなくちゃいけないシチュエーションにおくの。だから、青山にあるバーで働いて、そこでは英語使わないといけないの。ほとんどのスタッフは海外からの人で、お客さんも海外からきた人が多いから、毎日英語使ってたの。それは自分にとっていいことだったね。
Andrew: 僕もそのやりかたに同意するね。完全没入するのがベストだと思う。それと、英語か日本語話せる人と付き合うのもいいと思う。
Mari: うん、そっちのほうがいいかもね
Andrew: 僕の場合は、えっと、結構よかったよ、日本語話せる人と付き合うのは。
Mari: よかった！
Andrew: でも…
Mari: でも…何？
Andrew: たまに恥ずかしくなるよね…わからにあ。なんだろう…
Mari: 間違えたりしちゃうから？
Andrew: うん、間違って、でも相手が直してくれないとか。
Mari: あ、うん。
私は１６歳のときは英語全く話せなかったの。でもすごく頑張ったの、だって英語話せるとクールだと思ってたから。だから間違ったりするとどうでもいいの、だってみんな間違えるじゃん、ね？だから今でも、知らない単語とかあったら、聞くよ、ねぇ、これ知らないんだけど。詳しく教えてくれる？説明してくれる？うん。
Andrew: バーで一番僕は練習してると思う
Mari: すごい
Andrew: だってさ
Mari: それは女の子をナンパしてるとか？
Andrew: 違う、違う、それは違う。でも、だってさ、2杯くらい飲んだらさ、そこまで戸惑わないじゃん。そこまでしゃべるのに恥ずかしがらないじゃん
Mari: うん、アルコールのお手伝いね
Andrew: ２各語を話すのに、うんうんうん。でも普通に誰かに会ってしゃべるのって、自分をバカみたいに振る舞いたくないじゃん、間違えたりして。
Mari: だからみんなもバーやクラブに行って、ほろ酔いになって誰かとしゃべればいいんだよ。
