Junko: This week, I’m gonna teach Kristina about…this band.

Kristina: No Image.

Junko: No that’s the album name.

Kristina: Oh! I thought that was an error.

Junko: HOMMヨ

Kristina: HOMMヨ

Junko: HOMMヨ, which means what…male in French?

Kristina: Men?

Junko: Men? In French. Um..and I think the reason why they chose this is that all of them a kind of from look like boys.

Kristina: Really?

Junko: There’s this bass player that I absolutely love.

Kristina: Passionately…with all your heart.

Junko: Passionately…like…I want to be her.

Kristina: Be careful! Be careful!

Junko: I want to be in her skin! She’s just an amazing female bass player. She was playing at this count down concert when I first moved to Tokyo. And while we were there, this band was playing…and I really liked them. They were dark. I mean they are dark. And there’s like this..

Kristina: ..like me?

Junko: Like you. It’s like this warm dark. I dunno, like her voice? She has a deeper voice. It’s just very … I think she’d be a good vampire.

Junko: We have come up with a rating system for the bands that I introduce to Kristina. She’s going to give them..

Kristina: Skirts!

Junko: Skirts! 5 being “Wow, this is amazing. And 1 being…heh better luck next time!”

Kristina: If you don’t get any skirts, that’s kind of sad. Alright. Let’s play music.

Kristina: (Over music)..She has a sexy voice.

June: (Over music) Right??

June: But yes…out of the few songs that you’ve heard…

Kristina: Yeah.

June: They’re very very different from the other two where they’re very upbeat. Uh..other 3. Where they’re upbeat 4 piece bands, more mainstream. This is very indie…Japanese.

Kristina: I like their style. Um…it’s very different. I can see ..the first song that you played me…what’s the name of it?

June: 死体遊戯

Kristina: Like the sound of it makes me think of a Tarantino film kind of. It’s just really like..kind of..unsettling.

Kristina: This is a more mainstreamed..mainstream band in America..and I know you know them. But she..they (HOMMヨ) kind of remind me of an indie version of them. The song is called “Maps” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Kristina: (Over music) I love this song. It’s my favorite.

Kristina: If you watch the performances..and we’ll link both bands’ performances, and they’re different…but there are similarities. And one of the things that I really like is that it…it seems like it almost hurts them to be on stage. Obviously, they love what they’re doing..but there’s this..this kind of pain that’s either in their voice or..in their physical body..and it just.. like it makes you feel.

Junko: I think that’s what really…that defines a great musician. Is that if they can make the audience feel something.

Kristina: So uh…rating time!

Junko: How many skirts?

Kristina: Let’s see…I would have to give them… 4 and a 1/2 skirts!

Junko: Maybe 5 if you go to a concert.

Kristina: Maybe….

J：　HOMMヨは、フランス語で男性って意味かな？

K：　男性？

J：　フランス語で男性。たぶん、この名前を選んだのはみんななんとなく男の子に見えるからだと思う。

K：　本当？

J：　ベースプレイヤーがすごく好きなの

K：　情熱的に・・・心から

J：　情熱的に・・・彼女になりたいくらい

K：　気を付けて！

J：　彼女になってみたい！すごく素晴らしい女性ベーシストなの。わたしが東京に引っ越してきて最初にいったカウントダウンライブで演奏したの。このバンドがでてて、すごく好きになった。暗い感じで。こんな感じに。

K：　わたし・・？

J：　そう、あなたみたいに(笑。暖かいんだけど、暗い。よくわからないけど、彼女の声かな？ディープな声なの。なんか・・・ヴァンパイアになれそうな感じ。

J：　紹介したバンドの評価システムをつくったの。Kristina はどう採点するかというと、、

J：　他のバンドとすごく違うところは、他の２つはアップビートだったところ。あ、他の３つね。けっこうメインストリームの４ピースバンドだったんだけど、今回のは日本のインディーって感じ。

K：　スタイルは好きだよ、すごく個性的で。最初の曲は・・・なんていう曲だったけ？

J：　死体遊戯

K：　サウンドが、タランティーノ映画を思わせる感じね。すごく、落ち着かない感じ。

K：　これはもっとメインストリームな感じのアメリカのメインストリームのバンド。知ってると思うんだけど。HOMMヨは、このバンドのインディー版て感じね。この曲は、Yeah Yeah Yeahsの“Maps”

K：　この曲すごい好き、お気に入りなの。

K：　パフォーマンスを見ると、どっちのバンドのリンクも貼るけど、違うんだけど似てるところもある。すごく好きなところは、ステージに立つことが痛みにすら感じさせるところ。彼らは自分たちのやっていることを好きでやっているんだけど、でも声なのか身体なのか、痛みを感じさせて、それが何かを感じさせるの。

J：　それが素晴らしいミュージシャンの定義なのかもね。観客に何かを感じさせられるかどうか。

Junko: HI! I’m JUNKO!

Kristina: Hi I’m Kristina.

Junko: And this week…I’m teaching Kristina about this band..Cinema Staff. The last two weeks we’ve been…I introduced you to two girl bands. So this time I thought it’d be good to introduce a boy band…not saying that they’re a boy band…

Kristina: They’re a band with boys in it.

Junko: Yeah.

Kristina: I’m so smart.

Junko: I actually first saw them in Osaka…after…watching…a FLiP concert. ..They played together….so yeah…you know…FLiP!

Kristina: You’re just gonna mention them in every video!

Junko: FLiP!

Junko: I enjoyed them a lot. Their stage performance was amazing. And um…do you know “Attack on Titan”?

Kristina: Yeah.

Junko: 進撃の巨人. This band actually did the ending for the second season..or the second…yeah….and the ending song is by Cinema Staff. And so since then they exploded and they’re very successful right now.

Kristina: That’s great.

Junko: Yes.

Kristina: I have beer waiting for me.

Junko: Constantly.

Kristina: Everywhere.

Junko: They’re not medium tempo, but they’re very mellow. And they’re easy to listen to in my opinion.

Kristina: It is really mellow. I think it would be fun to play…if I was riding through the rice fields on my bicycle..Right now the things that I like are hard and fast and just like…ARGHHHHH…….

Kristina: You know me so well!

Kristina: So one of the reasons why we left my place is because my room is fucking hot.

Junko: SO…Cinema Staff…All in all? ..On a scale from 1 to 10? 10 being awesome…1 being…

Kristina: …not so good? I would probably give them a 5. I do like their sound..it’s just…it’s not…like the other two bands that you played for me were kind of unique. Maybe if I understood the lyrics I would be more….into it.

Junko: Impressed? To be honest…when I first saw the band…their stage performance was crazy. The guitar player…the lead guitar player…he is so…

Kristina: Wild?

Junko: So Wild. But the second he gets off stage he’s so calm, and I think it’s kind of that stage performance and then just that whole gap…

Kristina: …That drew you into the band?

Junko: Yeah!

Kristina: I think they’re a nice band. I think …from what it sounds like their stage performance is more…raw.

Junko: Yeah…definitely. I prefer to see them live…than…

Kristina: ..listen to the CD.

Junko: They’re definitely a live band. I mean if you really wanna see a great performance…you should definitely see their lives.

Kristina: Anyways…that was June educating me. AND me wearing a hat. Until next time..! Bye.

K：　男性メンバーで結成されているバンドってことね。

J：　そう！

K：　私って頭いい！

J：　 最初彼らを観たのは大阪で、FLiPのコンサートに一緒に出演してたの。FLiPは、知ってるよね

K：　ビデオ撮るたびにFLiPについて言及してるね！

J：　FLiP

J：　 すごく楽しいの、ステージパフォーマンスが素晴らしくて。あと、“Attack on Titan”知ってる？

K：　うん。

J：　“進撃の巨人”　このバンドは、第2期のエンディングに使われたの・・2期だったかな。そう、エンディング曲にCinema Staffが使われて、爆発的に人気がでてすごく成功したの。

K：　すごいね！

J：　うん。

K：　ビールが私を待ってる。

J：　いつでも。

K：　どこでも。

J：　 ミディアムテンポじゃないんだけど、すごくメローな感じ。個人的には、すごく聴きやすいと思う。

K：　 すごいメローだね。田んぼの中を自転車こいでるときには楽しいかもね。いま私が聴きたいのはハードで速い、アァァァー！って感じのやつ。

K：　私のことよくわかってるね！

K：　部屋を出た理由のひとつは、私の部屋がものすごく暑かったから。

J：　Cinema Staffどうだった？全体的にみて・・１から１０で測ると。１０が素晴らしいで、１が・・・

K：　あまり良くない？ 多分５位かな。サウンドは好きだけど、ただ、紹介してくれた他の２つバンドはユニークだったけど。もし歌詞を理解できてたらもっと・・・入り込めたかも。

J：　 もっと印象づいたかもね。正直いうと、最初に観たときのステージパフォーマンスはクレイジーだったの！ギターの、リードギターが、すごく・・・

K：　ワイルド？

J：　 すっごくワイルド！でも次の曲で出てきたときはすごく穏やかで、だからステージパフォーマンスとギャップが良いんだと思う。

K：　このバンドのそういうところに惹かれたの？

J：　そう！

K：　 すごくいいバンドだと思うよ。ステージパフォーマンスだともっと“生”な感じになりそうだね。

J：　うん、その通り。ライブを観る方が断然いいよ

K：　CDを聴くよりね。

J：　 うん、彼らはライブ向きのバンドだね。すごい良いパフォーマンスを観たいなら、彼らのライブに行くべきだよ！

June：Welcome to “Junko teaches Kristina about Japanese Music*!

Kristina: Look at my hat! Ok.

June：This week, I’m going to teach you about…ねごと!

Kristina: Negoto. I thought it was onion, but I was thinking Negitori.

June：ネギトロ？

Kristina：Ne.. negitoro?

June：Negoto..Japanese lesson!

Kristina: OK!

June：Negoto means sleep talking.

Kristina: Sleep talking..

June：’Cause you have Ne..which means..like from 寝る

Kristina: Ok..

June：..Sleep. And then Goto is from 言葉..which means..like..words. So Negoto..Sleep talking.

Kristina: Sleeptalking..cool!

June: Negoto is a 4 piece, all girls band. And what’s really cool…is that they are from Chiba. I’m from Chiba.

Kristina: OooOoo….

June: They’re all 23 years old…roughly …I’m 23 years old. I actually have a lot of mutual friends with them. ..but I personally don’t know them.

Kristina: This one looks like June..do you know her name?

June: That’s me!

Kristina: Oh! It’s June. Hi June!

June: It’s me.

Kristina: Here you are.

June: They just photoshopped my face a bit.

Kristina: And your boobs.

June: And my boobs. ..I’m going to play you their hit single from that album…it’s called “Loop”.

June: They’re pretty good…this is another song that was a pretty big hit. It’s called “カロン”.

Kristina: “Karon”?

June: “Karon”

Kristina: What’s that mean?

June: K..

June and Kristina: Karen??

[Music plays]

Kristina: Eh…I don’t really care for this one.

June: Oh..ok.

Kristina: I mean..it’s cute…but I like the other one better.

June: The bass line on the other one is really nice.

Kristina: It’s kinda unique.

June: That’s definitely the song that drew me in. And..I have a couple of their other singles and I have their album. But they’re definitely…there are songs that I like…I really like…songs that I don’t particularly care for…

Kristina: You don’t really care about them.

June: I just really listen to the few songs that I really like.

Kristina: Do they have a defined style or is it kind of here and there.

June: It’s very…the songs that you did listen to are very pop-rockish…often…I know they got a lot of criticism in the past because there’s this pretty famous band called Chatomonchy. They have a very similar style. I know that when they first came out a lot of people criticised them saying they aren’t original because they’re just a copy band of Chatomonchy. And I think they’re from the same agency or like record label. So that just kind of made it tougher for them.

Kristina: How popular are they now?

June: When their songs came out, their songs were used for the AU commercials….they you know…right off the bat…pshewww! Don’t really hear about them now.

Kristina: Oh.

June: But uh yeah…they’re still around.

Kristina: See, the thing I liked about that first song you played was the..the sound..of the melody contrasted with the singer’s voice. So I’m personally not a fan of the really high pitched squeaky voice. It’s ok once in a while…you know for like characters or in music, but what I liked about that first song is the contrast with how dark and deep the melody was. When you flip it and you use that squeaky voice with like really happy pop….there’s so much of it…and it kind of makes me want to throw up.

June: It’s very…common.

Kristina: Yeah!

June: ..to say the least. Especially, I mean…a lot of Japanese artists, female vocalists..not everyone but a lot of them…the majority of them do have a high pitched voice. And so they kind of fall into that category of “High pitched voice pop music”. But they do have those occasional songs where it’s the exception. And it’s like WOW.

Kristina: MmmM yeah. Maybe I would buy it. Actually…I would probably buy a few singles…but not the whole CD.

June: COOL.

Kristina: ANYWAYS….was that rude??

June: I don’t know!

Kristina: OH SHIT. OK! ANYWAYS! BYEEEE.

June: PSHEW!

K：　はっきりとしたスタイルを持ってるバンドなの？それともあちこち散らかってる感じ？

J：　いま聴いてもらった曲はポップロックな感じだったと思うんだけど、過去にかなり批判されたことがあるの。結構有名なチャットモンチーってバンドがいるんだけど、スタイルがすごく似てるの。ねごとがデビューしたとき、チャットモンチーのコピーバンドだからオリジナルじゃないって非難を浴びたんだよね。ふたつとも同じ事務所だかレーベル所属。それがねごとにとっては厳しい状況になったの。

K：　どれくらい有名なの？

J：　デビューしてから、auのCMに使われたの。だからヒューって、すぐに有名になったの。今はあんまり聞かないね。

K：　ふ〜ん

J：　まだ活動してるけどね。

K：　ほら、最初の曲の好きだったところは、曲のメロディーとボーカルの声のコントラスト。個人的に、あんまり高音のキーキーする声が好きじゃないの。たまにだったらいいけど。キャラクターとか曲とか。最初の曲はダークでディープなメロディーとのコントラストが好きだったの。それをひっくり返してキーキー声に超ハッピーなポップを合せちゃうと・・・やり過ぎ。吐き気がしちゃう！

J：　超ありふれた感じになっちゃうね。

K：　そうね！

J：　控え目にいっても。日本の女性アーティストは、全員ではないけど、大多数は高音の歌声だね。だから、だいたいみんな″高音ポップミュージック″っていうカテゴリーに分類されちゃうね。で、たまにそうじゃない曲が出てきて、そういう時は「わお！」って思う！

K：　そうだね〜。買ってみるかも？アルバムじゃなくて、シングルを数曲。

J：　・・・いいね！

K：　失礼だった？

J：　さぁ？

Hi, I’m Airi. I’m Japanese and I’m from Gunma. In my videos I’m gonna talk about..mostly about fashion. Men’s fashion, girls’ fashion…both. Sometimes I might talk about nightlife in Tokyo … hopefully.

I started learning English since I was like 5. And then…I used to go to English language school with my mom. Yeah that school…had like…every year..every summer…this like..big homework. And I had to go to a place..where a lot of foreigners come..for site seeing. And I had to take pictures with them…and at least 5 pictures and like I had to put them on the board panel and hand it in.

That was really hard for me..doing that…because I was so little. But yeah I was doing well…well compared to my brothers I guess. And yeah. I’ve been studying English a lot, because my major is International Communications..it’s like almost…English major. and when I was 19, I went to LA…to study abroad. And I spent like 11 months there. And that was really a big change of my life. But my English is pretty much like that…so hopefully you guys will enjoy my videos so…See you soon!

こんにちは、アイリです。私は、群馬県出身の日本人です。私のビデオでは、ファッションのことを話していきます。メンズ、レディース、どちらも。たまに、東京のナイトライフについても話せたらいいなと思ってます。

私が英語を勉強しはじめたのは、私が5歳のときです。英語の語学学校に母と一緒に通っていて、毎年夏になると大きい課題が出されました。外国人がたくさん訪れる観光地に行って、彼らと写真を撮らなければいけなくて、、最低5枚は必要で、パネルに貼って提出しなければいけなかったの。私はまだ小さかったから、その課題はすごい難しかったんだけど、兄に比べるととても上手く出来ていたの。専攻が国際コミュニケーションっていう、ほとんど英語専攻みたいな感じだから、たくさん英語を勉強しています。

19歳のときにLAに留学して、11か月間過ごしました。それが人生の転機でした。でも、私の英語はこんな感じだけどね。ビデオを楽しんでもらえたら嬉しいです。またすぐに会いましょう！

Junko: So the whole segment is where I introduce a Japanese band, usually a Japanese indie band, or not so major band to Kristina..who doesn’t know any of these bands.

Kristina: Please educate me.

Junko: I’m going to educate her.

Junko: For the first band of this segment I decided to bring my favourite band..which is…”FLiP”!

Kristina: OOoOoo

Junko: ((makes laser noises))

Flip, just to give an explanation is a four man band…or a 4 woman band, they’re from Okinawa. They’re a rock band a Japanese rock band. What’s really cool is that pretty much all of their songs are done in minor chords so they have that dark melancholy sound to them…which I like a lot…because according to my brother-in-law I’m very emo.

I saw them..for the first time about 3 and a half years ago. My best friend, Andrew took me to a “One Ok Rock (バンド名)” Concert for my birthday and they were the opening act. I went to every single one of their concerts that I could go to ..and then I went back to America, came back to Tokyo and went to a lot of their concerts and…they’re really cool.

Kristina: That sounds like an interesting track.

Junko: It’s called coming out.

(Rock music plays)

Junko: So the first verse is…coming out coming out, あなただけが知ってるわたしの才能にふと気づく、、

Kristina: Oh say that again, in English.

And I think it’s cool that they were singing about such a taboo topic.

Junko: I recently saw them in 9 months and it was amazing seeing how much they improved. Just not their stage performance or sound but their stage performance and how they involved the audience and I was just so impressed.

Kristina: Do you think they’ll have coffee with us one day?

Junko: Oh we could ask! Let’s go to their concert next time and we can ask “Hey let’s have coffee.”

Kristina: Can I ask by going, “Let’s have coffee together….” You think it’ll work?

Junko: Yeah..ask the drummer….Ask the vocalist..

Kristina: Alright, I’ll ask all of them. I’ll definitely check out the rest of the album.

Emo(エモ) は音楽のジャンルの一つです。解釈は日本と欧米で少し異なるかもしれませんが、エモーショナルの略で感情を揺さぶるメロディや歌唱などが多様されるものを指したりします。very 〜 という表現は〜ぽい、と表現するときにも使われます。たとえば、ある音楽がOasis っぽいな、と思った時、It’s like very Oasis. で、これ超オアシスぽい、という言い方ができます。

not mediocrely
　中途半端じゃない

mediocrely というのは、平凡に、という意味の新語のようで辞書などには乗ってないこともあります。ですが若者の間では普通に使われている言葉のようです。語源は mediocre (平凡な)という形容詞です。この場合、(bully me,) not mediocrely ということで、bully にかかるので副詞的に mediocrely が使われています。

口語なので、感動した、の方が意味合いとしては近いです。この表現はとっても便利ですね。音楽以外でも映画や本の感想を聞かれてこう答えれば、とっても良かった、ということが伝えられます。

J：　FLiPは沖縄の、4人のガールズバンドです。ロックバンドね。なにがカッコイイかっていうと、ほぼすべての曲がマイナーコードで演奏されるから、ダークでメランコリーなサウンドになるの。それがすごい好きで、、お義兄さんによると私は“エモい”らしいから。

このバンドを知ったのは3年半前で、親友のアンドリューが私の誕生日に連れて行ってくれたOne Ok Rockのコンサートのオープニングアクトだったの。行けるコンサートは全部行って、それからアメリカに行って、日本に帰ってきてからもたくさんコンサートにいって、、すごいカッコイイの！

K：　この曲良い感じっぽいね。

And I’d go like, *Hi. Where are you from?” That’s the first question. And then if they say, “I’m from America. I would say…”Oh my god, I love America so much!”

I mean like, the reason why…aside that I never developed any cooking skills..is sheer impatience and laziness. So yeah..laziness is a big part. That’s why I usually date people that can cook for me.

Airi: You don’t even need taste? Like salt, pepper, soy sauce..?

Kristina: Soy sauce, yeah. I usually put soy sauce and goma dressing. Goma, goma, sesame seed!

Kristina: Hey it’s Kristina and I’m grabbing coffee with my friend Airi, but I can’t show her until she has her coffee. Well, today we are going on the Hato Bus and going around Tokyo. I actually don’t know where we’re going exactly, but it should be interesting! Anyways…more soon…

Kristina: Oh! There it is! The Hato Bus!! YAYYYY! Airi! You’re awake now! Say, “Hi!”.

Airi: Heeyyy!

Kristina: Airi! 挨拶, go!

Airi: Hey, I’m Airi. I’m from Japan. But, like..I’ve never done this thing before. So I’m kinda excited ‘cause I’m such a country girl. YAY.

Kristina: YEAH!! Oh wait. Look. IT’S MY FACE. I’m crossing the street and holding a camera! I’m so talented. ANYWAYS. Let’s look at the people! Well I guess the Hato Bus is popular with the foreigners as well as Japanese people who are interested in seeing Tokyo.
My head is so big! Airi! Come forward!

Airi: No, my face is too small.

Kristina: Oh she has such a cute little face! So wait! Let’s do this again. My name’s Kristina!

Airi: I’m Airi.

Kristina: And we’re going on the Hato Bus.

Airi: YAY.

Kristina: YEAH. We’re gonna see Tokyo! I really don’t know where we’re going.

Airi: Really…?

Krisitna: Yeah, really. Do you?

Airi: No..

Kristina: Really?

Airi: No..

Kristina: OK…Surprise!

Airi: Second floor.

Airi: The history of Tokyo station. Ok.

Kristina: Yes?

Airi: It was built in 1914, but World War 2 happened, because of that…they couldn’t completely build it. They couldn’t finish it because they got into the war…so they kind of stopped. And then 1964, they started building it again. Hmm…yeah. That’s it.

Kristina: Ok. And when did they finish?

Airi: 1964.

Kristina: Oh…so like 10 years.

Airi: そうだね.

Kristina: [Mumbles]

Airi: Hmm?

Kristina: Nothing. I’m hungry. ..What? ..Ok..bye.

A：違うよ、私の顔が小さいんだよ。

K：そうだよね、アイリ顔小さいもんね。待って！もう一回やろう。クリスティーナです！

K：私たち、はとバスに乗りまーす！

A：イエーイ！

K：イエイ！東京観光しまーす！でもどこに行くか本当に知らないんだよね・・・

A：そうなの・・・？

K：うん、知らない。アイリは？

A：知らない・・・

K：びっくりでしょ？（笑）

A：２階席だって。

A：東京駅の歴史ね

K：うん

A：1914年に建設がはじまったけど第二次世界大戦が勃発して、完成させることができなかったんだって。途中でやめちゃったみたい。で、1964年に建設を再開したみたい。そんな感じ！

K：いつ建設は終わったの？

A：1964年

K：じゃぁ・・・１０年くらい？

A：そうだね。

K：（ぶつぶつしゃべっている）

A：ん？

K：なんでもない！お腹すいた・・・えっと、じゃぁね！
