■■ 今日のフレーズ！■■
go steady with me
「go steady with me」は昔ながらの英語の告白のフレーズです。デートなどをし続けるんじゃなくて、「steady」は安定を保ってこのまま付き合う形にする、という様なイメージです。今ではあまり使われていないフレーズですが、誰もが知っているフレーズです。
ups and downs
上がり下がり。テンション上がったり、下がったり、喧嘩したり、仲良くしたり、安定のない状況を表現するフレーズです。これはどんな状況にも使えます。
bullshit
直訳で言うと「でたらめ」です。
drama
「drama」は良く使われる単語です。ややこしい状態や、喧嘩など、そのようなシチュエーションをまとめて表現できる単語です。例：「there is a lot of drama on 2chan」
be real
このフレーズは「向かい合って」や「現実的になって」などを表現するフレーズです。例えば「私とちゃんと向き合って」など言いたい場合は「be real with me」など言えます。「もうちょっと現実的になりなよ」は「oh come one, let’s be real now」この様に言います。
Amplified
直訳は「強調する」です。Junkoは歌詞がメロディーと重なってそれが曲の意味をより強調してることを言っています。普段でしたら音楽について話すときに使う単語です。
comes to mind
「頭に浮かんでくる」の意味です。何かを見たり、聴いたり、感じるときに何かを思い出してそれが頭に浮かぶことを表現しています。例：「While reading this book, that song came to mind」の用な使い方です。
bring out both good and bad
「良い部分と悪い部分を引っ張りだす」意味です。これは人物でも、なんでも、自分にとって、ある人にとって、良い部分と悪い部分を引き出すものに対して使うフレーズです。
tugs at the heart
感情的になることを表現しています。普段だと心がぎゅーっとなるときや、キュンキュンするとき、悲しくなるときに使うフレーズです。怒りや喜びのような激しい感情はなくて、もう少し落ち着いて、ジワジワ感じる感情のときに使います。

Junko: Yea!
Kristina: Who is your favorite artist?
Junko: Tegan and Sara! They’re from Canada…and they’re twins. They both write their own music and sing their own songs. And they both have a very different style. And I actually wanted to talk to you about one of their songs.
Kristina: Oh, which one?
Junko: It’s called “On Directing” and…
So…that song, as you heard, has a lot of repetition. And the beat is very steady, which kind of goes along with the lyrics. The main part, is “go steady with me” as we mentioned earlier, you can interpret songs in so many different ways. “go steady with me” usually means like…um…will you go steady with me?
Kristina: Oh sure…
Junko: And it’s like asking someone out, will you be my girlfriend? But the way I took it, is… Go steady with me. No ups and downs, be level, no bullshit, no drama. Just…be real. Amplified even more with just the steady consistency in the beat, in the music, in the melody. The other part of the lyrics… “You’re directing me, eyes focused like a microscope” Being scrutinized…no matter what you do, they’re watching you and they’re telling you its wrong. And then they’re directing you and want you to be like this. The whole go steady with me is like, just stop that…
Kristina: What’s interesting is like, I get that feeling, but the imagery that comes to mind because of the…that…steady bass and like, the rhythm. And even the repetition of the words makes me think of running. Go steady with me. I’m at this pace, let’s go at this pace together.
Junko: It’s Sara’s song, actually, and a lot of Sara songs are very repetitive…but it’s within that simplicity that you can find its hidden messages and stuff, and I really enjoy that… TAG! Your turn.
Kristina: Ok! So my favorite artist, is actually quite old. And I grew up listening to him. The musician that I’m talking about is Billy Joel. He’s famous for songs like “Piano Man” and “New York State of Mind” …but my favorite Billy Joel song is “She’s Always a Woman” The lyrics that I remember the most are um …
“She will promise you more
Than the Garden of Eden
Then she’ll carelessly cut you
And laugh while you’re bleedin’
But she’ll bring out the best
And the worst you can be
Blame it all on yourself
Cause she’s always a woman to me”
Now, this song was written for his wife, and at that time she had taken over managing his career. She had been criticized by other people for being too tough. All of those things were just a part of who made her who she was. She would always be beautiful to him. For me, I feel like those lyrics aren’t just like, a romantic thing, it’s…it expresses something that describes people. Humans. So I see it in my mom, in my friends, I see it in myself. You know? This ability to bring out both good and bad. In the end, we’re still human. This song is very lyric heavy and that’s pretty much his style, you know. He tells a story and he paints this image the way he wants to. And I think that’s also a beautiful thing too. Because as an artist, you draw the picture in everyones mind. It’s up to you whether you give them more control, less control and it just depends on what your style is.

この曲、聴いたように繰り返されてるもの多いよね。ビートもすごく安定してて、歌詞とすごく合うんだよね。サビの部分に「go steady with me」って、以前言ったように曲の解説って人それぞれじゃん。それで普段なら「go steady with me」って…えっと…will you go steady with me（付き合ってくれますか）？
Kristina: あ、はい…
Junko: 告白する感じで、彼女になってくれない？でも私は…「go steady with me」上り下がりがなくて、平行で、でたらめなくて、ドラマもなしで。ただ…向き合って。安定してるビートと音楽とメロディーでより強調されてるのね。他には…「You’re directing me, eyes focused like a microscope」って部分があって。精査されてて…何やっても見られてて自分がやってることが間違ってるって言われて。それでこうなって欲しい方向に指摘してくる。だからその「go steady with me」って、もうやめて…
Kristina: 面白いのがさ、その感じも伝わるけど、頭に浮かんでくるイメージ、その…ベースの安定感とリズム。あと繰り返される歌詞とのコンビネーションで走ってるイメージが浮かんでくる。「go steady with me」このペースにいるから、一緒にこのペースで行こう。
Junko: これはSara の曲で、実はSaraの曲って結構繰り替えす感じが多いの…でもそのシンプルなスタイルの中に秘密のメッセージとかがあって…そこがすごく好きなんだよね…タッグ（鬼ごっこ用語）！あなたの番！

この曲は当時の奥さんのために書かれてて、そのとき彼女は彼のマネージャーになったの。他人に厳しすぎるってかなり批判されてたの。でもその全てがあったから彼女であって。彼にとって彼女はいつまでも美しい。私にとって、この歌詞って恋愛とかだけじゃなくて…人のことを上手く表現してると思う。人間を。お母さんからも見えるし、友達にも、自分にも。わかる？誰かの最高な部分と最悪な部分を引き出す。でも最終的にはみんな人間なの。この曲ってかなり歌詞メインなんだけど、彼のスタイルなんだよね、これが。自分なりにストーリーを描いてね。そこも美しいと思うの。アーティストとして、人の頭の中に絵を描いていくのね。それでその人にどれだけのコントロールを与えるかは自分次第で、自分のスタイルによるよね。
