先月リリースされた大人気YouTuber、Troye SivanのデビューEP代表曲、Happy Little Pillを解説してみました！

On July 23^rd, 2014, Troye Sivan, a popular YouTube/actor/artist, released his debut single, Happy Little Pill. Within hours of the release, the song had gained thousands of plays. Finally, when the music video was released, it quickly shot its way up and past the millions in views. And let’s not even get into the cover videos that have been popping up all over YouTube even before the release of the video.

２０１４年７月２３日に大人気ユーチューバー・役者・アーティストのTroye Sivanがデビューシングル「Happy Little Pill」の音源をリリースしました。リリースから数時間しかたってないのに数千回はもう再生されました。PVがやっとリリースされたときは、一気に何万回も再生されました。YouTubeでPVリリース前に彼の曲のカバーした動画の数には触れなくても予想は付きますよね。

Sivan, known before for his acting career, quickly grew in popularity on YouTube, and I, personally, enjoy watching his videos also. From his witty remarks to his musical covers, he was someone I watched quite often. So when talk about his EP came to surface, I was excited. I had enjoyed his original songs in the past, as they made me laugh and smile. Now, he will be releasing an EP. What more could you ask for?

SivanはYouTubeで人気になる前は役者としてちょい有名でした。個人的に私は彼のYouTube動画はかなり好きです。キレのある突っ込みやカバー曲、私は彼の動画を結構見てます。なので、EPを出す話が浮き出てきて、テンション上がりました。彼が前に作ったオリジナル曲は好きだったし、笑えるし、とにかく笑顔になります。それで今回はEPをリリース。これ以上要望するものはないでしょう？

The slow beat synths mixed with his melancholic voice, Troye’s song speaks clearly and truly of the false pretense the media has embedded into our minds about happiness. Let’s take a look at the lyrics now.

So what is this song exactly saying to us?

It is pointing out that today, happiness seems to be bought instead of felt. We see through the video, that, while it may bring us momentary happiness, it does not last. If it does not last, is it true happiness?
では、この曲はいったい私たちに何を伝えようとしてるんでしょうか？
これは、現在の状況では幸せは感じるものじゃなくなって、買う物だってことに指をさしています。PVを通して、瞬間の幸福を感じたとしても、長く持たないことを分かります。それで長く持たなければ、それは本当の幸せなの？

Take a look at Troye, himself, sitting in a nice apartment, bored after flipping through the channels, only to give up and stare at his ceiling fan.
Troye自身を見てみてください、高級マンションにいるのに、つまらなそうにテレビのチャンネルをまわして、最終的に天井のファンを見つめる事に。

We see the soccer player on the empty field kicking the ball around. Then it cuts to him sitting down because its not fun if you are alone. We are shown the couple having a heated scene in the pool, but then it cuts to the girl watching traffic from the bridge.

そしてサッカー選手が空っぽなフィールドでボールを蹴っているのを見せられます。そして次は彼が座っているシーンになります。１人だと楽しくない。カップルがプールの中で熱くキスしているのも次のシーンでは彼女は歩道橋から道を見つめています。

Everything eventually leads to being alone and bored, because the material things that they once thought brought them happiness are things they bought, and only lasts momentarily. When it wears out, what you have left is only time to kill and you yourself. Happiness isn’t something you buy, nor is it something you can “do,” but it is a state of being.

最終的に全てが独りでつまらないことに繋がり、一度は物質的な物から幸せを得られると思っていても、それは一瞬しか感じない。その気持ちがなくなると余った時間と自分しか残ってない。幸せは買えるものではなく、「やる」ことでもなく感じる「状態」である。

The owl is symbolic for wisdom. In this video, the owl is watching all of these actions, and it questions whether or not our generation truly knows what it means to be happy when we only focus on these material things in life.

時々でてくるフクロウは知恵の象徴です。PVではフクロウは全てのアクションを見ていて、私たち、現代の人たちはこうやっていつも物質的な物に捕らわれているから、本当に幸せって意味を知っているのだろうかと問いかけています。

Cocaine, dollar bills = drugs and money…things that will give you momentary relief
コカインとドル札…これは一瞬だけ安心できる感じを与えてくれるだけ

この生活から唯一逃げられる方法

The simple lyrics are emphasised even more through the simple scenes in the video. The feeling of this odd sensational boredom and lack of happiness can be felt through Troye’s singing. Usually when I watch his videos, they are full of witty jokes and sassy remakes, but the flatline feel to this song only adds to the message that it sends out. At least, in my opinion. I do really think that this song does a good job in expressing this topic, and I also feel that it is something that relates strongly to Japan.

このシンプルな歌詞はこのシンプルなPVと一緒に深い意味を強調してます。その変わった退屈な感覚と感じない幸せはTroyeの歌を通して感じます。普段彼の動画を見るときは冗談や少し生意気な感じだけど、この平べったい感じの曲はいつもの彼とは正反対でよりこの曲に託されたメッセージが強く感じます。個人的な意見ですけど。この事についてこの曲は上手く表していると思いますし、日本に取ってかなり的中することじゃないのか？って思います。
