With all the promotional polaroids she posted online or the snippets of lyrics she shared, everyone sat on the edge of their seats waiting for the release of 1989. While there were troubles with the album leaking, her fans stood by her side and waited until the album was available in stores to deluge themselves into the Swifty world.

After taking a look at numerous rankings and charts around the internet, I noticed that off of this hit album, the song “Blank Space” took the spot of number one by quite a difference.

Personally, I find this song talking about numerous things. Right from the beginning you can tell that the song is about how a new relationship can go either way. Good or bad. It talks about the positives, or the negatives, that can come with relationships. But I also believe that this song has an undertone of irony. She is taking the words that many people say about her, and she makes fun of herself, but we will get into that more later on in the article.

個人的に、この曲はいろんなことについて話してると思います。最初からこれが新しい恋について話しているってことに気づきます。良くも悪くも。ポジティブなことやネガティブなことも恋愛にはあります。でもこの曲は皮肉な部分もあると思います。彼女は世間が彼女について言っていることを受け取り、自分のことをバカにしてるが、これはまた後で話しましょう。

Knowing right away that this person isn’t good for you, but you can’t help the attraction you feel towards them. You know that it won’t end up well, and yet, you go against your gut.

Taylor knows that she has a reputation for going through guys. She is acknowledging this rumor and knows that no matter who she meets, they will have heard of her. Although in reality, it is because she lives such a public life and writes about them, that it seems like she has had so many boyfriends. But I know plenty of people who have had more.

Taylorは自分が男に関していろんな評判されていることはちゃんと認知してます。その噂などを受け取り、誰と出会ったとしても、相手が自分のことを知っているこをわかっています。でも現実的には、彼女が世界に自分の人生をさらけだすような立場にいながら、自分の恋愛を曲にするから彼氏の数が多いと思われています。だけど、私の知り合いの中により多い彼氏を持ったことのある友達も何人かいます。

Here is where you see her playfully mock the media. She has a new boyfriend, how will it end? It’s not just the media anticipating the end of this newfound relationship, its also herself.

ここで彼女がメディアに対して面白おかしくバカにしているところです。新しい彼氏がいるけど、どう終わるの？この新恋の予想してるのはメディアだけじゃなくて、彼女自身でもある。

The last line also relates back to one of the first lines in which she mentions how this person look like her next mistake, because she likes the bad boys. Even though she is only able to make them good for just a weekend…therefore they become her mistake.

最後の一行も曲の始まりの一部につながって、彼女がこの人は次の間違えに見えるってところですが、彼女が悪い男が好きだからです。でも週末だけは良い男に変えられるんだけど…だから間違いになっちゃうんですね。

We see it going back and forth at this part. It will be great, or it will be a disaster.

ここでは良いと悪いを行き来しているところです。うまくいくか、最悪に終わるか。

As she mentioned before in the song, she likes the bad boys, the players, the ones that end up being her mistakes. And those bad boys are the ones that love playing the game as much as she loves them.

以前も彼女が言ったように、彼女は悪い男、プレイヤー、彼女の間違えになるような男が好きです。その彼女がその悪い男たちを好むくらい、彼らは恋愛のゲームが大好きです。

Here is where she continues on with the bashing of the media who believe she has had too many boyfriends. Then the stigma that when there is a breakup, the men will always call their ex “crazy” or “insane.” It is also a challenge she is setting up for this new potential lover. It’s as if she is saying “Hey look, I do have a past and I have a lot of ex boyfriends and they all call me insane, but if you want to take the chance on me…”

ここではメディアが彼女の彼氏の数が多すぎるって言うことに対して返してます。それとカップルが別れると男性は元カノのことを「クレイジー」や「狂ってる」って良く言うステレオタイプにちなんで話しています。ストーリーとしては新しい恋人候補の人にチャレンジを投げています。「私には過去があるし、元彼も多いし、狂ってるって言うかもしれないけど、私にかけてみない・・・」と言っているように聞こえます。

The blank space she mentions here is at the bottom of the list. There is still space for someone in her life and she can write your name there if you want to take the chance on her.

空いているわくはリストの下にはまだスペースがあることをさしています。彼女の人生にはまだ人を受け入れられる余裕があるから、もし彼女にかけたければ、名前を書くよ、と言っています。

After taking a listen to the whole album, I can see that “Blank Space” is one of the most popular songs on the album. It, at least, ranks at the top in my opinion.
