World Cup もいよいよ決勝戦と３位決定戦を残すのみですね！前回に引き続き、スポーツで良く使われる英語フレーズを交えてJKが各試合を振り返ります。また、最後にはどの選手がタイプ？という女子トークも。二人は誰がすきなんでしょうか？

We are in the finals for the World Cup now! As a continuation from last time, here are some phrases that may be useful when talking about sports. JK takes a look back on some games while also talking about their favorite players!

Junko: That’s a first.

Kristina: Hey Jun

Junko: Have you been watching the world cup?

Kristina: Yes I have. Did you see the game between…uuuhhh…was it Brazil and Colombia?

Junko: Colombiaaaaa…yeaaaaa…I did.

Kristina: Yea? What’d you think?

Junko: I mean, some people had, I mean, came into the game with a lot of expectations, they wanted them to do…well they expected them to do well, they’re the star players. But instead, they didn’t do anything.

Kristina: Yea

Junko: And then…who…uh…Rodriguez? Who came in without any expectations, he ended up scoring the only point for Colombia. I mean it was 2 to 1, Colombia lost, but the only point for Colombia. And…at the moment he has the most scored points…goals.

Kristina: Bravo

Junko: Pretty awesome

Kristina: Rodriguez

Junko: Rodriguez.

What did you think of the game Netherlands vs Costa Rica?

Kristina: That was a pretty good game.

Junko: It was intense.

Kristina: Yea…they were tied 0 to 0, um…and they had to have a…what’s it called? A penalty shoot out, or otherwise known as a PSO. And the score ended up being 4-3. A really close game. And I felt like Costa Rica was really hungry for the win. And they’re an underdog…an underdog team.

Junko: They are.

Kristina: Yea…but who doesn’t like a Cinderella story?

Which brings us to Wednesday’s game.

Junko: Brazil vs Germany

Kristina: So wait…let’s talk about predictions before we actually had seen the game, I mean, being that the World Cup is held in Brazil, and Brazil is a very strong soccer team…I well, I honestly wanted them to win.

Junko: I kind of had high expectations for this game. Both teams are just so strong

Kristina: Impressive…

Junko: I thought it would be a really exciting game. Oh, well, in a sense it kind of was exciting but…

Kristina: Or upsetting…

Junko: It seemed like after the first 6 minutes and after the first 4 goals scored by Germany, Brazil just kind of…

Kristina: Threw in the towel.

Junko: Mhm

Kristina: It was kind of heart breaking to watch the fans because, the game was on Brazilian soil.

I don’t know what it was but you could see that the defense wasn’t on Germany the way they could have been. They had stopped running by the time someone kicked it.

Junko: Yea…they gave up and they just kind of stood there.

So Kristina…who’s your favorite player that has…

Kristina: …a handsome face?

Junko: And participated in the world cup.

Kristina: Oooooh kaaaaay

Junko: This year.

Kristina: Purely on looks…I like…Kevin Prince Boateng from Ghana.

Junko: Why?

Kristina: He kind of looks like a UFC fighter. And, so, I mean…

Junko: He looks strong

Kristina: He does. He looks very strong. And I guess that’s my type. I like strong people. Um…he also has like, high cheek bones um…really full lips…I feel like I’m talking about myself. Maybe I just like myself?

Junko: He just represents a male version of you.

Kristina: If I was a boy, I would want to be Kevin Prince Boateng.

Junko: That’s why she finds him attractive…yea that makes sense.

Kristina: Um…so anyway, Jun! What about you?

Junko: Um…that was a really tough question. So probably my favorite athlete, purely based on looks is Neymar from Brazil.

Kristina: Ooooh from Brazil, yea he’s cute.

Junko: He is cute. He has a really cute face. Um…not much of a fan of his hair, but you know what, we can work on that. Wear a hat.

Kristina: Waaaait a minute…so…now that I’m looking at your face, and thinking of Neymar’s face…you both kind of have these little cute cheeks…right? Neymar. Let’s just post his face here and it would be like, the same. Well, I mean if we post his face.

Junko: He also has kind of a long face…

Kristina: Yea! We like ourselves! Mystery unlocked!

Junko: Makes sense…so Kristina…

Kristina: I feel very vain now…

Junko: I like…I like talented and skilled athletes…people in general.

Kristina: And I like strong brutes.

Junko: Well, um, I hope you guys learned some new phrases that you can maybe use when you talk about sports. Tell us who your favorite athlete, soccer players are.

Kristina: Yea, who’s your favorite soccer player? I’d like to know

Junko: I would. And we could compare and then…

Kristina: Yea, is it based on skill or just good looks?

Junko: If we’re talking about skill…oh ok, we won’t get into that

Kristina: Maybe next time.

Kristina: そう？どうだと思った？

Junko: なんか…何人かはさ…こう、期待されてて試合に出た訳でしょ…活躍してくれるって期待で…スター選手なんだし。でも、何にもしなかった。

Kristina: うん

Junko: それで、誰…ロドリゲス？あまり期待されないまま出て、最後にはコロンビアの唯一のゴール決めたじゃん。２対１で、コロンビアの負けだけど、その唯一のポイント。今だと得点王だし。

Kristina: ブラボー

Junko: かなりいいじゃん

オランダ対コスタリカの試合はどう思った？

Kristina: 結構良い試合だったよね

Junko: 盛り上がったよね。

Kristina: うん…０対０で、えっと…あれしたよね…なんだっけ？シュートアウト、PSOね。それで最後には４対３。かなりいい試合だったね。コスタリカすごく燃えてたよね。彼らはアンダードッグのチームだよね。

Junko: そうだね。

Kristina: でも、シンデレラストーリー嫌いな人いないもんね。

それで水曜日の試合

Junko: ブラジル対ドイツ

Kristina: 話す前にさ、試合見る直前の予想の話しよう。今回のワールドカップってブラジルで開催されてるじゃん、それにブラジルって強いし…正直勝って欲しかったよね。

Junko: 私はこの試合にかなり期待してたよ。両チームかなり強いし。

Kristina: さすが…

Junko: かなり盛り上がる試合になると思ったよね。まぁ、ある意味盛り上がったかもしれないけど…

Kristina: それか悲しんだり…

Junko: 最初の６分たって、最初の４点をドイツに入れられてから、なんかブラジル…

Kristina: タオル投げたよね

Junko: うん

Kristina: ファンとか見てて心が痛んだよね、やっぱりブラジルの地でやってるんだし。なんだったのか分からないけど、ディフェンスが少し乱れてたよね。誰かが蹴った後もう走るの諦めてたし。

Junko: うん…もう諦めて立ちすくんでたよね。

それでKristina…一番好きな選手で…

Kristina: かっこいい顔してる？

Junko: それとワールドカップに出場した…

Kristina: はぁぁぁい

Junko: 今年

Kristina: 外見だけで言うと…私は…ガーナのケビン・プリンス・ボアテングが好き

Junko: 何で？

Kristina: なんか、彼UFC選手に見えるから。それと…

Junko: 強そうだよね。

Kristina: そうね。とても強そう。それなんだろうね、私のタイプ。強い人が好き。それと…彼の頬骨高いし…唇もふっくらしてる…なんか、自分のこと話してるみたい。もしかして自分のこと好きなだけ？

Junko: 男バージョンのKristinaの代表じゃん

Junko: だから魅力的に感じるのね…納得

Kristina: え…それで、Jun！あなたは？

Junko: うーん、これ結構難しい質問だってね。たぶん、私が外見だけで選ぶとしたら、ブラジルのネイマールが好きかな。

Kristina: あぁぁ、ブラジルのね。彼かわいいよね。

Junko: うん、かわいい。かわいい顔してる。でも…髪の毛はあまりファンじゃないよね、でも、まぁ、帽子でもかぶってれば大丈夫だし。

Kristina: ちょょょょっと待って…あの…Junの顔見て、ネイマール思い出して…なんか、二人ともさ、ほっぺたかわいいよね…でしょ？ネイマール。ここに彼の写真でも貼付けたらさ、同じだよ。ここに貼付けたらね。

Junko: 彼の顔も長いよね。

Kristina: うん！自分たちのことが好きなんだ！ミステリー解決！

Kristina: なんか、すごいうぬぼれてる気持ち…

Junko: 私は…私は優秀で才能のあるアスリート…人が好き。

Kristina: で、私は強い人が好き。

Junko: えっと、じゃ、皆さんスポーツに関してお話するときに使えるフレーズ覚えたかな。１番好きなアスリート、サッカー選手教えて！

Kristina: うん、どのサッカー選手が１番好き？知りたい

Junko: 知りたいね。そして比べられるね…

Kristina: うん、技術で好きなのか見た目なのか

Junko: 技術で言うなら…まぁ、いいや

Kristina: また今度ね

Junko: またね

Kristina: 息できない

■■ 今日のフレーズ！■■

really hungry for the win

「really hungry」を直訳すると「すごくお腹空いた」ですが、「for the win」を後にすることで、「really hungry」が「欲しい」と意味になります。お腹空いているときに食べ物を欲しがるのと同じで、後に食べ物じゃなく「勝利」を言うだけで「勝ちたい」って意味になります。この「really hungry for…」は勝利や食べ物だけじゃなく、「ゴール」や、試合・勝負に関することに対して使えます。

underdog

「アンダードッグ」は期待されてない、誰も気にしていない、弱いと思われている人物・チームなどが這い上がってきてかなり良い勝負するか勝つことの意味です。例えばクラスで１番か弱そうで運動音痴の子がマラソン大会で優勝するとき、「he’s an underdog」など言えます。
「ダークホース」と同じ意味です。「ダークホース」の意味は英語でも同じですが、かなり古い言い方で、「アンダードッグ」のほうがよく使われています。

Underdogはアメリカの昔のアニメでもあります。

Cinderella story

シンデレラの用な話で、何もないとこ・１番した、など、から這い上がってきた状態を表すフレーズです。

Threw in the towel

直訳ですと「タオルを投げ捨てた」です。スポーツ選手が諦めてタオルを投げ捨てる場面をイメージしてください。このフレーズはスポーツだけじゃなく、チャレンジ、試合、勝負に出てる人が諦めるときに使えます。

Purely on looks

「純粋に外見だけで…」って意味です。「purely」は「pure」からきていて、純粋って意味です。ですが、ここでは「純粋に」ではなく「単純に」のほうがニュアンスが近いです。

high cheek bones

「頬骨が高い」って意味です。日本ではあまり褒め言葉にならないかもしれませんが、アメリカなどでは、かっこいい・美人の人は頬骨が高いイメージなので、褒め言葉になります。「He has high cheek bones」

full lips

「ふっくらした唇」。これも日本ではあまり褒め言葉じゃないかもしれませんが、ふっくらしてる唇は褒め言葉にもなります。例えば Angelina Jolie の唇もふっくらしてて、彼女の唇を好む人は多いですよね？
