最近の頻出ワード “LGBT” について理解しよう!

最近急に目にするようになった “LGBT” という言葉、何のことか分かりますか? 欧米では浸透していますが日本ではまだ馴染みが浅いですね。是非この機会に理解を深めましょう。

Recently, “LGBT” has become more common, but do you know what it means? In the west, it is quite common to know, but in Japan, it is still an unfamiliar word. So let’s learn more.

Now with Shibuya-ku in Tokyo recognizing and giving same sex couples the same benefits as heterosexual couples, the word “LGBT” has become more and more seen here in Japan.

Awhile ago, a TV show aired an episode where they talked about LGBT awareness and asked their guests to figure out what “LGBT” stands for. I was personally surprised to see that not very many people could actually answer what any of those letters stood for. I suppose, having lived in America for a good part of my life, it has never really been something that was unfamiliar to me. Having friends and family in the LGBT community, I was accustomed to this from a young age. But, this is not the case here in Japan, where it is still socially shunned for the most part.
Recently, there was a survey had been conducted that showed that 1 in 13 people within Japan identified as LGBT.
Yet, it seems as though the majority of Japan does not fully understand what this acronym means. So, let me break it down for you.

First off, “LGBT” is what is known by the majority, but the true acronym is “LGBTTQQIAAP”. Wow, that’s really long isn’t it? I personally don’t think that you need to remember everything, but knowing that that is the true acronym is important. But definitely know what “LGBT” means. That, I believe, is important.

Good, now we all know what LGBT stands for, and the many other labels that we have for people from all sexualities.

Now, I would like to point out that these are just labels that help people identify themselves as their figure out the ropes in their own lives. Labels also help others help get an idea of who you are if they are unfamiliar with the different sexualities. But you should never let labels define who you are.

Just because you are a man and you like men, that does not define your entirety. Just because you are transgender does not give anyone else the right to treat you differently. Do not let that be your only definition. If you like labels, wear it boldly and be proud of what and who you stand for. Being open about your sexuality is something to be proud of. Even if you are just an ally, being supportive about equality is awesome. It’s beyond awesome!
