Stay by Lisa Loeb~

With the influence of a popular TV series, 「若者たち」in which actress Nagasawa Masami’s character sings Lisa Loeb’s hit song, “Stay,” it has made a comeback, gaining a lot of attention in Japan. Hitting the top numbers on the charts, “Stay” pulls at your heart strings as a song that anyone can relate to.

Loeb’s song first gained attention through the hit movie “Reality Bites.” Her good friend, Ethan Hawk heard the song and thought it suited the movie and had Ben Stiller listen to it. With that, Loeb’s song was used in the movie, landing her at the top position on the charts. She is the only artist to ever reach number one unsigned. Although, after her success with the song it was not difficult for her to sign onto a record.

“Stay” thus became her iconic song, and it was through this movie, that the song was used in this TV series.

“Stay” is made reference as a song that was played as the wedding song for a couple. The two had both loved the movie “Reality Bites” and had gone in search for the soundtrack. Specifically for that song. One of the main characters in the show is in a secret relationship with the husband, and associates this song to him. When she finds out about the back story to this song and it is such a memorable song to the couple, she is torn apart.

And in order for her to get over him, she requests Nagasawa Masami’s character to sing “Stay”

This scene made headlines and drew much attention to both Nagasawa and Loeb. “Stay” made its way onto the charts and making everyone feel the pains and the aches of a breakup all over again.

You say I only hear what I want to

You say I talk so all the time so.

And I thought what I felt was simple,

And I thought that I don’t belong,

And now that I am leaving,

Now I know that I did something wrong ’cause I missed you.

Yeah, I missed you.

And you say I only hear what I want to

I don’t listen hard,

I don’t pay attention to the distance that you’re running

Or to anyone, anywhere,

I don’t understand if you really care,

I’m only hearing negative: no, no, no (bad)

And so I, I turned the radio on, I turned the radio up

And this woman was singin’ my song:

The lover’s in love and the other’s run away,

The lover is cryin’ ’cause the other won’t stay.

Some of us hover when we weep for the other who was

Dying since the day they were born.

Well, this is not that:

I think that I’m throwing, but I’m thrown.

And I thought I’d live forever, but now I’m not so sure.

You try to tell me that I’m clever,

But that won’t take my anyhow, or anywhere with you.

You said that I was naive,

And I thought that I was strong.

I thought, “hey, I can leave, I can leave.”

Oh but now I know that I was wrong, ’cause I missed you.

You said, “I caught you ’cause I want you and one day I’ll let you go.”

You try to give away a keeper, or keep me ’cause you know you’re just so scared to lose.

And you say, “Stay.”

You say I only hear what I want to.

This is truly a heart wrenching song that I do believe most anybody can relate to. Loeb had mentioned in an interview that usually she only sings about fictional settings. Yet, for this song, she based it off of her crumbling relationship with her previous boyfriend. She had let what others were saying about them get to her head, and this let those words block out the positive.

The song speaks about a breakup. And, just as the lyrics say, the reason for the breakup stems from “…I only hear what I want to” and “I’m only hearing the negative” which leads the the insecurity where you can hear when she sings “I don’ understand if you really care.”

Then she believes that she had made the decision to leave him, but in truth, he was the one leaving her. After she had decided to leave, she realized that she didn’t want to really leave, yet by then, he had already left. He had grown tired of her not noticing the “distance that [he is] running” and not listening to anything he says.

While, perhaps not all of us have gone through these exact moments, we can still agree that we have gone through a breakup and have trouble moving on. How we spend nights listening to songs that sing about our broken hearts, trying to comfort our crying selves with junk food and romantic movies. The majority of us who have gone through heartbreaks…those who have hearts, knows the feeling of missing someone when its too late. That feeling is this song.

Now, let’s all cry while singing along!
